This is a song that I learned is a "The Boss" song after I did it... I was ripping off the Hank Williams III version at the time. I eventually heard the "The Boss" version, and while I must admit the lyrics are great, I prefer the Hank music to the song, which differs from that of "The Boss". I always assumed I was not a fan of "The Boss", but I really like this song. And I do like calling him "The Boss".

If you have the time, can you tell me what's wrong with this? I did it a while ago and I think it's worth saving (by my standards), but I don't think it's a good mix. Assume all performances must be kept the same and can only be increased or decreased in volume.

Thanks.

UPDATE-

Don't bother commenting on this one, guys. I got uppity all of a sudden and decided it doesn't meet my lofty standards, so I'm shitcanning it. Thanks.

Mods, you could delete this if you want.

Initial impressions - vocal up a tad, OD guitars down a tad, bass a bit more in the very bottom end. You churn this stuff out like a human jukebox - that's not meant to be a criticism. Not really a fan of the boss either, but the boss is a pretty boss thing to call yourself haha

I don't know if he self-applied the name "The Boss", but if he did, and since it apparently stuck, I must agree that that is pretty BOSS... and while I was never fond of THE BOSS' music, I will submit to the fact that he is, in fact, THE BOSS for being able to pull that off! :)

I think the guitars being too loud might be what was bothering me the most about this, I'll remix it and see if the vocal can carry more of it. Thanks for the critique.

I recorded this one a while ago. Basically I went from recording all heavy and fast stuff to trying stuff like this. I realized that old Black Flag all kind of sounds the same when I play it. I probably should have concentrated on learning to play guitar, but what fun is that, right? :)

I agree that the vocal needs to cut through a little better and there is too much guitar crunch for this style of song (for my taste...crunch more a matter of personal preference there). Also, it seemed like the timing was a hair off when the song switched gears from fast to slow. All in all great effort and pretty decent recording!

Thanks, Jimi. I decided to shitcan this one... I got a bunch of better drum mics on the way and hopefully they will help me graduate from "lo-fi university". I think I'll keep this tune in my back pocket for a remake at a later date, by which time I hope to have learned how to play some real guitar chords to it... then I'll make the tone less crunchy, almost acoustic in flavor.

Your drums sound a lot better here. They are tighter in general as well.
Your chord transition on the guitars could be faster.

Definitely make the vocals louder.

Second time tonight I get to say "Yee-Haw!" Sounds fun!
I need to take lessons from you on how to get all the guitars to play well together and sound good...:)

Hey man, you do entirely too many songs about God to have that much sarcasm in one comment. :)

Listening now on not great headphones. Here's what i'm noticing...

1. some noise at the beginning. might want to cut out or make more obvious if you like it.

2. vocal seems a little buried.

3. the change up sounds a little odd...a little stumbly. drums sound a little clumsy..or simple, but it kind of fits.

4. i found the end a little odd...maybe it's because your last vocal note went up instead of down...but that's nitpicking.

That's about all i'm really hearing. Cool little tune. I can hear the Old 97s doing something like this.
