Violin would sound great on this. I think we should go for the whole folky sound on this.
 
I'm trying to put together some kind of drum track right now...I'm aiming for around 120 BPM....sound about right?

that was my initial thought, i would doubt that it is in time everywhere. If you do get a drum track put it up on its own and i will record to it.
 
Actually that's probably a bit slow.

Edit: actually was strumming away there 120 sounds good.

Sure, I was figuring that it was all a rough scratch track to be redone. I was sort of sketchy on the chords changes on this one-more or less following you're moves.
Tele, do you have any loops with brushes on the drums-that might sound good-a sparcer drum track.
Thanks for the compliment Mr G.-the mando is an 'F' style Washburn, a friend had an older one just like it and I fell in love with the feel of the neck.
I may try to work out a bass part after the retracking too-I have a nice Jazz bass copy.

I have quite a few brush loops, only they don't fit the tempo I'm after. They're acidized .wav loops but I don't have a sequencer that supports acidized loops sadly. I'm putting together a very basic track but it's easy to sound 'rock n roll' without meaning to! :o
 
Okay I managed to use a time-stretching algorithm in Cubase to make a 97 BPM brush track 120 BPM. The problem is though it does mess with the audio quality. So if it passes the test and is to your guys liking, we could use it...I made a quick sample of how it sounds here:

Failing that, I have alot of more standard 4/4 rock tunes, but they all sound kinda heavy. Other alternatives are.....

A composite loop made of single hits (Hi hats, bass drum snare, you know, the dum-dum-da-dum beat :( )

Midi loop (I have an addictive drummer demo)

Cajon/Bongos/Shakers (see Pic)

That loop is a bit too fast i think. I would also plump for something a bit more sparce, maybe with rim shots. I have a load of them in various formats, i will look around today and see what i have. Maybe someone here could do some drums for us. Anyone keen?
 
I have just found some loops that will work. They are jazzy and slower, I will retrack my guitar to that then we can add the other parts.

If you are into it i might have some more songs for you to play on in the future. Im recording my second album at the minute, think 'Nick Drake' meets 'Beatles white album'...

Yeah i really like that mandolin sound. I think im going to write a few around the mandolin. I play a washburn as well on that track. Great instrument makers.
 
Ok ive done a backing track so we can all be singing from the same Hymn sheet. I think it was at 100bpm. Anto can you record some mandolin again over this and send me the wav files? I recorded this at 16 bit (mainly because im working over a few different machines) can you do the same? if not its cool, i will only convert once anyway.

The track has a count in and there is two turns of the chord progression before the vox and the same after the chorus and middle 8 section. That place would be ideal for fills and such.

What i was thinking was that it could keep building. Start it off kind of folky and then move somewhere else. I was thinking that ambient sounds would be tremendous on it.

Sounds great! Im going to put a windchime on it as well i think, just at the bit where the harder drums kick in to coincide with the harmonics sweep.

I added a bass line to Gummblefish's drums & guitar-Not flashy but it should carry it along a little better. I will add mandolin and probably some guitars if we need them-is it solely acoustic or can I add some electric guitars too?
