I think this is the mic i want to get. ive heard a lot of good things towards what im goign to be using it for. i havent actually heard it for myself bc i havent seen it in any music stores though.

main purpose is a vocal mic, i record all kinds of vocals, hip hop, rap, rock etc...

currently im using an studio projects b1 through a vtb1 pre.
i want to step it up a good amount cause i have the money now. id like to get it used but its never on ebay which i think is a good thing as far as the mic goes. so i guess im just going to buy it new.

anyways, i jsut wanted some fianl opinions on this mic for a good vocal mic that would work well with several styles. thanks.

another question: i have a pair of mxl603's. ive never used them on vox before. do any of you? and if so, what styles would they work on well. thanks for any responses

Great mic. The iron in it gives it kind of a dark flavor, smooth on top. I like it.

I've been meaning to try one of those...Good luck, bet it will be real nice!

I have the 3D Mic CD which has the 4047 along with a bunch of high-end mics and I think it sounds great. It's very middle of the road - not hyped, but not flat and dull either. If you check eBay for a while, you might pick up one there pretty cheap.

Great Mic

This is a great mic in my opinion. I have used it for vocals, guitar cabs. But, my favorite is using my pair as drum overheads. I like them for this application. Get the AT shockmounts for sure.

Good Luck,
Daniel

I've been watching eBay constantly for an AT4047, but they don't come up that often. Full Compass is selling B-stock (without the shockmount) for $399, which strikes me as pricey bullshit.

I'll wait.

The reviews I've seen in several places are highly favorable to this mic, and for more than just voice. I'd like to have one. Or two.

I'd agree that it's one of the most underrated microphones out there.

FWIW, I've been thinking the 4047 would be a good male vox mic to compliment my CR998. I recently purchased a Sebatron valve pre and asked the builder to recommend a good vocal mic for that pre and he mentioned the 4047.

I've tried the 603s on vocals before and for me would probably only use them--if ever--on backing vox (same singer) to give a different flavor. I don't know that I'd ever pick the 603 over a good LDC or dynamic for lead vox. The bottom line is, you try different mic/pre combos and use what sounds best to you for that song.

I am also looking at purchasing a new AT....

Why did you pick the 4047 over the other models (4033, 4040)??

Can anyone else give any thoughts on the differences these mics would make on vocals??

They're all good.

Track rat made reference to the fact that the 4047 has a FET transformer that supposedly gives it bit more of a classic vibe ala the Neumann U47 FETs. How much of that is real versus marketing hooplah, who knows? It is decidedly a different-sounding mike than the others in the 40 series, though, and seems to be well-liked and accepted even by the gear snobs.

The FET is a transistor - not transformer.

The same can be said for any Chinese mic. They all (condensers) use FETs if they're not tube mics.

Back in the early 60's Neumann started designing FET mics and I think the 4047 was AT's stab at the sound of those early Neumann FETs. At least that's how they try to market it. I can't remember if it uses a transformer or not, but I believe it does.

Most of Audio Technica's microphones are relatively neutral, clean microphones. They'll admit that they're designed to be microphones that would sound good on just about anything, but not necessarily great on anything. If it was my first microphone I probably would have picked up a 4040 or 4050 (not a huge fan of the 4033 myself, and I especially don't like it on vocals). The 4047 is a microphone that was designed to have more of a "sound" to it, like the early FET microphones as others have mentioned. I tried it and really liked the way it sounds.

And, for what it's worth, it does have a transformer-coupled output. And it even came with a nifty little velvety cover thing that fits over the microphone on its shockmount, so I can leave it on its stand without having to worry about dust or the like.

How much different is the sound of the AT4047 from the AT4040?

Enough to warrant owning both?

AT4040 Versus AT4047SV

Hi bgavin,

I love my 4047SV for many applications but I also like the 4040 microphone too. In my opinion it's just another flavor to add to your mic cabinet & a damn good compliment to the 4040 as well. I have to say that I am not in love with the A-T shockmounts, I prefer to use my AKG H-100--that is one that will fit most any LCC microphone. :)

My question is how much difference is the flavor.

Vanilla vs French Vanilla

or

Vanilla vs Chocolate Fudge?

I could better use the flavor analogy if we were comparing dark English ales and stouts (or Yorkshires like Old Peculier)! :D

That said, I think the 4040 has a slightly mellower sound to it than the 4047 does. IMHO, the 4047 is the better microphone to my ears, but the 4040 is a fine mic for the dough & sounds good too. I would use it anytime for anything and trust that it will do the job just fine.:)
