Im wondering if anyone can tell me the difference between the at4033/CL, 4033a/SM, and the 4033/SE? are these all the same or are the made during different years?
thanks
Jacob

my pal at AT tells me that when the at4040 came out they renamed the at4033 to the at4033cl which stands for classic. apparently despite it being around for so many years, it is still a staple in many studios so AT has decided to let it hang around. The 4040's job was to improve on what shortcomings the 4033 had

The AT4033 is an electret, and the AT4040 is externally biased. I've never been able to get past the "electret=cheap" stigma, even though most Shure are electret. Including the pricey SM81 series.

I have the AT4040 and think it is a well kept secret. $235 on eBay, $299 at all the storefront vendors. It is quiet, has good SNR, and lots of output. 2 micron diaphragm for fast response.

They both have their pros & cons -- yins and yangs to them.

The 4033 may be an electret, but it's still unique in that it's a medium-sized diaphragm -- also 2 microns (or close) if I'm not mistaken -- and is embossed for greater bass response.

Obviously, the smaller diaphragm might mean better off-axis response which might make it a little more versatile. And whatever the hell the embossed diaphragm thing is all about, it really does seem to pack a nice wallup when placed out in front of a kick drum or a bass cab . . . and the SPL handling on that thing is pretty stellar to boot.

From a lot of guys I've talked to, word is the 4040 makes a better vocal mic, and has a smoother top end to it, so in that sense it is apparently an improvement. At the same time, people should know that it's still a very different mic from the 4033 -- and probably has a lot more in common with the 4050 if anything.

i have a 4050/cm5....wtf is cm5, more bullstuff? country music5? Might be my fav vocal mic for myself in my piddley mic collection.

The AT4050/CM5 is out of production, replaced by the AT4050.

I've looked at the specs and chart, and can't the difference. Perhaps the guy here with the friend at AT can get a valid answer.

I think the AT4040 is a great purchase at a relatively low price. Can't be beaten. I'll get more detail and more versatility with it, not only for vocals but for any kind of acoustic instruments, specially ac. guitars.

The 4033a was the older version. So there is a bit of date stamping in the naming conventions. It's not a very flat EQ mic, but really nice in that high SPL handling, great low end, and really wide cardioid, almost OMNI. But there is a difference between front and back, even if it takes a while to figure that out if it's your first mic of that type. Pretty killer on Bass Trombone, but on Tenor Trombone just meh.
