Unfortunately, I am bound to the world of mail-order where I can not audition mics like everyone says to do. Therefore, I have to rely on suggestions from people on here and a few other respected sources. Therefore, consider the following:

Those of you who have had experience with both mics please compare and contrast the Audio Technica AT4033 and the Apex 420 for me. I have read/heard good things about both mics and I would like to know which one I should sink my hard-earned money into. Which one will I get more varied uses from? Basically, which one is the BETTER MIC?

Thank you for your consideration. ;)

The AT-4033 is a very nice mike that I and many people find useful for many applications. I have never heard or heard of the Apex, so I can't directly compare. I do know that you would definitely no be going WRONG with the AT. It is a great bargain at about $300.

The Apex looks reasonably good and has reasonably good specs. BUT...it looks uncannily similar to the large number of microphones that are now being made in China and sold under various Brand names in the US and eleswhere. Check out http://www.797audio.com and http://www.soundking.com and see what I mean. Those same companies make slight variations to the casings, windscreens, etc for other OEM's products.

NOTHING WRONG with these mikes ! I own a CAD C400S that I picked after direct A/B comparison with many much more expensive mikes. I thought CAD was a US mfg, but I later discovered that that mike was made in China. I still have it (though it is for sale ($120))

It may be good, you just never know unless the company has a reputation or you get to try out the mike. I would either get the AT-4033, or buy my CAD, or buy some other used or low-cost mike that you can get some direct feedback on. No sense in taking a chance on something noone apparently knows anything about(unless it is a REAL bargain !!!) There are LOTS of Chinese and Russian mikes in the sub-$200 category these days. Some pretty danged good. the AT-4033 is probably a slight step above them, and has an excellent reputation. Actually, I sold my AT-4033 AFTER I got my CAD, because i liked the CAD better. It seemed "more neutral" wheras the AT-4033 was a tad "bright".

In fact, i went back and checked, and the specs of the Apex are IDENTICAL to my CAD. The housing is also identical, but the windscreen is *slightly* different in contour. I'll bet their both clones. I think mine comes from Soundking. I also think that is where Carvin is getting their mikes.

Peace,
Rick
