AT4033 vs. 4050

I have a chance to trade in my AT 4033 for a new 4050 with little additional cash. Pros vs cons of this transaction. Help please.

Depending on just how much "extra cash", I'd go for it. I've always found the 4033 to be a rather mediocre mic, while the 4050 is a real workhorse. You can use it for vocals, horns, banjo/fiddle/guitar/mando, piano, amps, various figure-8 applications, drum overhead, etc.

The two are very different, btw. Some people make the mistake of thinking that one is the "big brother" of the other, but that's not the case. The 4033 is a medium-diaphragm electret, the 4050 is a large diaphragm externally polarized condenser.

You really need to try both on YOUR sources. I have owned both and sold both. I wouldnt mind having a 4033 at all, for my sources. The 4050 is very versatile mic though. See, I was no help at all.

I have a 4033a, and I find it's very nice for doing acoustic instruments. What do I know, but I like what I've done with it. I'm no pro engineer, but I've been in plenty of sessions, and been playing for 27 years... and I think I have some kind of an ear.

I got some giutar/vox things in a small room in my house, and went to a Tascam 788. Sounded great. But the buzz on the 4050 is vresatility. I'd do it, I think. Based solely on the word... lots of good end-user buzz.

Depending on how much a "little additional cash" is, I'd do it. I have a 4033 and 2 - 4050s. The 4050s as multi-pattern mics are way more useful and aren't as hyped in the high end as the 4033. I find them more pleasant and more flexible.

i had both for a while. each is a little different. both will get you good results. i wouldnt get the at 4050 based on vesatility. how many actually use there figure 8 pattern especially on vocals or acoustics but your needs may vary.

I almost never use figure 8, but I sure use Omni a LOT!

Actually, The Listening Room clips of the 4050 in figure 8 on acoustic is what motivated me to get one. I tried it, and guess what? Sounds just like the clips.

I find figure eight pretty useful, but that's cause I like M-S....And the AT4050 is the most popular multipattern under 600 new - according to a poll I did here a while back. Search and you'll find it...the M179 from Cad and the SP T3 were the runners up.
