I'm workin' with a budget around $100 to $150 for a mic... I'm really using it just to get experience with mixing so I'm lettin' people just come in 'n mess with it so I can learn to mix vocals 'n get it to sound right... I go to pro studios for my own work but anyway, what mic do you think would do me good? I hear these are the two better ones for that price range....

Oh yeah, and I'm working with a Line 6 TonePort UX2 USB Recording/Modeling Interface... I had an Alesis 8 track mixer but the preamp was trash on it so I just sent it back....

So what do you think? And what do you think 'bout that interface? I heard and read good things 'bout it so I copped that...

Oh, and by the way, this is for rap vocals........... Advice would be appreciated....

Thanks

I have a 2020 and a 2021 and love them both. If you are interested in them, I would be happy to sell them. I just got a AT4050 and an AKG Solid Tube, so I have no use for these. They are mint and still in the box. I used them only a couple of times. They offer serious bang for the buck.

You have stuff recorded on 'em? I would need to hear the quality....

email me or leave me your SN or somethin'....

AT2020 is bright. V67 is muddy. Both have some sibilance issues.
Both might suit some instruments. Neither are great for vocals.

I wouldn't call the V67 muddy. It's got a vintagey midrangey thing going on, but all in all it's a decent mic for the right application. Compared to it's inexpensive Chinese colleagues I'd say the V67 is not hyped. It's a great entry-level vocal microphone. I use it frequently and prefer it, for vocals, to SPB1, Rode NT1A, JM-47, C3000B. YMMV.

Follow the link to my tunes in the sig and you will see that the V67G is quite a decent vocal mic.

The V67 is my second favorite cheap condenser. I use it for voice over and when you close mic it, it gets a little muddy, and doesn't cut through the music bed. A little comp/eq fixes that. But it's definitely great for the money.

My new favorite, for vo, is the KEL HM-1. Great timbre and no sibilance.

Of course, I'd love to have a Sennheiser MHK 416 shotgun, the official Hollywood movie trailer mic, but they're $1000.
Seems a little expensive for voice over.

That hasn't been my experience recording upwards of 14 vocal tracks through an RNP. Like I said, check out the samples and let me know if they sound muddy to you.

Beautiful World

Nice track. Sounds good. Very "Beatlesque".

I would suggest looking at the Cad M177. It costs about 60 dollars more than the v67 or the at2020, but it is fairly neutral in its sound. I've used the m37(same mic as m177) on alot of rap vocals. It doesn't lack low end and its not harsh. It also doesn't have a scooped mid range. It may be a nice combination with some of the preamp models on the toneport. I also own 2 v67 and they work well on some vocals and on some rap vocals. However not all of the vocals do not cut through a heavy mix very well, but sometimes I really like the flavor it adds. Well anyway thats my 2 cents.

Thanks people... I just ended up ordering a Studio Product B1
