Hi ALL -
I was able to get a AT 4033, in very good condition, on eBay yesterday. I got this for $217.50.

Did I do well?? Is this mic still respected in the field?? I'd like to use it mainly for vocals, but also want to play around with it as a second mike to my acoustic guitar.

Any comments are very welcome. I'd also love to hear what Harvey thinks of this mic.

Regards,
Andrew

Yea, you did well. It's a good mic. Enjoy.

Yep. You did OK. I paid $300 for one and $280 for another new. Your gonna love it.

I paid $599 for mine... of course, that was sometime around 1995.

Littledog - Yeah, but do you like it? And do you still use it? If so, mainly for what?
Regards,
Andrew

can anyone compare the new at4040 to this? I have seen it new for under $300.

I am also curious how these would compare to the neuman k184

A few days back I auditioned the 4040 and liked it very much. I thought it had a nice crisp high end without being too harsh and to me it held its ground against the 4050. Personally, I liked it at least as much, or more, than the TLM 103. I will probably get one soon.

But they did not have a 4033 there to compare on the spot, so this is one reason I've posted this thread. I want to find out more about the 4033 from people who have used it. I really bought it based on reputation and the good price. So, I want to see if its still being used, and if so, what for..

I confess, I don't use it much these days, not because I hate it, but because i have so many other mics that I like better on specific things.

I'd love to use it as a tom mic, for instance, but it only has a -10dB pad, compared to the AKG414's which have -20dB which is makes them more useful for that application.

That's just an example, but it seems like on most things I can think of, I have a couple (or more) of other mics that do a slightly better job.

That doesn't make it a bad mic at all. It's a good low budget "all-purpose" mic which no one should be ashamed to own. There may come a time when I "rediscover" it and start using it again!

One's an apple and one's an orange! Seriously, they are different types of mics, so it's difficult to compare them. The ATs are medium/large diagphram (sp?) mics and the KM184 is a small diagphram mic. I have the AT4033 and a KM184 and each one has its uses.

Ditto.

I just got one from ebay, as well. Just got it here today.

I want it mainly for solo acoustic guitar, and while I've only had a couple of hours with it, it seems like a winner, about 12-18" from the top, behind the bridge, and turned to avoid all that air whooshing out of the soundhole.

I've been trying the usual suspects on my 000-28 and 00-37K, and finding them too way too shrill, but the 4033 seems to be the ticket.

I got mine for...(ahem)...$175, with a 1 channel phantom power adapter thrown in. :)

Hmmmm, $175....I guess I'll have you bid on my next one for me...

As you use it, check back here and tell me how you continue to like it. THANKS!

I love my 4033.. It's so versitile...

Vocals, Drums, Guitar, Sax, you name it, it works great!

Guys: I hear great things about these ATs (4033/4040) and wonder if you can compare them w/a Rode NTK. I like my NTK, but would like to try an AT for solo trumpet, if it provides a "different/better" color????? Although I realize all this is so subjective...for example, I bought a used Beyer M260 and don't really like it at all!!

I have owned the AT 4033 for about three years. Some things I have learned about the mic. It only sounds good on some vocalists. It is a really dark mic and I have noticed that it shines on Female vocals. It sounds amazing on classical and some steel string guitars. I was never completely happy with it for vocals though and started using it primaraly as a acoustic guitar mic. I have gone back and listened to some track recorded a few years ago of some classical player, and was blown away with the sound.

Telefunken -
What male vocals does it sound good on?? Can you elucidate on what you mean by "dark"?

On my voice and a lot of male vocalists. When I would use the AT 4033, It never quite sat well in a mix. No amout of Eq would help either. It sounded like there was a blanket or something over the mic. I would much rather grab the Rode NT-1 for male vocals than the AT 4033. But on female vocalists the ones who could really sing it sounded fantastic. I remember one girl doing a demo and she had a voice somewhat similar to Jewel, and I was just amazed at the sound. But don't take my word for it. Try it out and see if it works for you. For me, it only seemed to really shine in some applications.

T -

You're one of the first on this board that I've heard actually recommend the NT1 for male vocals. So much so that I just sold mine!

It was o.k. on my vocals, they were clear enough , but lacked a warmth that I prefer. I was hoping to get that with the 4033, and I'm also going to get a 4040 since I auditioned it recently and LOVED it.

I'll submit my results here when I get back home in mid-September.

THANKS for taking the time to write!

Regards,
Andrew

I dont think that the 4033 is a dark mic at all. I notice that you like really bright vocals and that may be the reason why.

I have not put the 4033 in front of anything where it did not sound VERY good.

in fact, here is an mp3 on male vox nonetheless that was done with a 4033 into a dark sounding tube pre. It is not eqd and it sounds pretty bright to me.

Yea, I was about to say, Telefunken . . . you probably just have a preference for bright-sounding mics. You should check out the Marshall mxl 2003. It's a bit bright, but a smooth, unannoying bright (not harsh/sibilant).

To me, the AT is kinda' bright, but it has this mid-rangy thing going on that I think is it's trademark.
