im using the audio technica 4033 as an overhead for my drums. i've found that the further away the mic is, the more airy it sounds. so i was wondering how close to the up-toms i can safely put the mic. here are the specs:
MAXIMUM INPUT SOUND LEVEL
145 dB SPL, 1 kHz at 1% T.H.D.;
155 dB SPL, with 10 dB pad (nominal)
thanks for your help

as close as you want.
if it distorts (doubt it) back it off

Have you tried it in front of the kit as well? We get good results placing an AT4033 in front of the kit, nearly center, slightly angled down toward the kit and favoring the snare a bit, about 4 or 5 feet off the floor.

Yep, I think the 4033 was made in heaven for this purpose. With those specs, you can probably get that mic pretty close to the kit before it distorts.

overheads

I also agree back off if your getting distortion from toms. I angle my overheads straight down over the kit.
