hey.. i have planned to get the c1... i was on ebay.. bid on a 4033.. but the bid never reached the mark it had. to ... i forget the name.. but i emailed full compass...( the seller) . and they will give it for 290 ( new) with free shipping... is it really worth the extra 90 ? plan to se of vox and maybe some acoustic...thanks in advance.... plz respond asap.. as the deal will end soon.

The AT 4033 (i hope im thinking of the right model number) is highly regarded around here as a very usefull mid level multi purpose condensor. I believe they were originally alot more expensive and AT has gradually dropped the price. 290 doesn't sound bad but I haven't looked into them in a while. You may want to do a search.
The C1 supposebly has a spike in the higher freq, Ive never used one but just from reading different reviews and members experiences with the c1 i would say that its probably less of a "do all" mic than the 4033.
As with all mics, theres no "right" or "best" mic and its better to try and experiment with each mic on your own voice.
If it were me making the purchase I would probably pick up the At 4033 assuming thats a descent price. I would imagine that it would come in handy alot more than the c1 for guitars and other things as well as vocals.

A good friend of mine works for Audio Technica in Stow, Ohio. He has told me that the only reason they keep the AT4033 around is that it has been sort of a standard "must have" in any mic locker for the past several years. With that said, he tells me that the specs for the AT4040 are actually better than the AT4033 and despite it costing less. I picked one of not to long ago for alot less than $290 and as far as LD condensors go, it's excellent. Recording Magazine also has commented how the AT4040 does not have some of the annoying midrange nuances that the AT4033 does. hope this helps.

hey... i called em.. and asked if they had the 4040.. they did... for some reason.. your words in your post overtook me.. and i told the guy i want the 4040. thanks for the advice.. i checked the specs.. they are a little better.

i would have probably chosen the AT4033 over th AT4040 myself. Better specs doesnt mean jack for one reason. But i love my AT4033s, especially on acoustic guitar.

its not just the specs. Check out recording magazines review of the mic and their opinions as well. Besides my buddy at Audio technica really doesn't have any reason to push either one, especially the lower priced 4040. He simply states that their R&D dept at audio technica feels the AT4040 improves in some aspects where the 4033 is lacking. Nonetheless, both are very good mics.

Steel,

Ask your buddy for an honest appraisal of the AT4049, AT4051, AT4053 set. These are SDC with interchangeable capsules, and are the high end of their line.

The AT4033 is an electret, and the above are true condensor types.

I'm curious what your friend thinks about the sound. I'd like to own a pair of all three.

as a general use condensor, I'm very happy with the 4040. I've used it about on anything you can imagine. Bgavin, I'll aske him about the aforementioned mics. Give me a week or so and keep an eye open for the post.

I don't know much about the 4040, but I've used the 4033 extensively. I like the 4033 on a lot of instruments. It's a great acoustic guitar mic (at any price point). It's good as an overhead mic at times. It's good on guitar cabs strangely enough. It's also good on some female voices. I don't like the 4033 on my voice. For your nasaly voice, the 4033 emphasizes the nasties a bit too much. But as an instrument mic, the 4033 can't be beat for value and performance.

Between the 4033 and C1...the answer depends on what you want to use it for. If you are focused on recording voice, I think the C1 is a better vocal mic in most cases (just my opinion). However, as an guitar mic or multipurpose mic, my vote would be for the 4033. As far as the 4040...I can't say.

ive really been interested in trying the 4040 for some time now. Hopefully i will be able to get my hands on one to try it out.

What i really think works with the AT4033 being versatile is the fact its a medium size diaphragm. This makes it inbetween the uncolored small diaphragm type and the colored large diaphragm i guess you could say. I think they should make more mics like that (even though it really might not have anything to do with small and large diaphragm at all). Instead of just going all out neutral or all out colored, having one that balances the two can really add.

And just the fact that i really love the AT4033 on acoustic guitar is another reason why i recommended it. Although if the AT4040 sounded just as good it would be irrelavent.
