for f*cks sake, just leave it. or settle it off the forum.

im quite interested in this thread because for the money, the at3035 is an excellent mic.

but it really annoys me to come back to the thread to see this argument. cool it guys, or sort it out elsewhere.

Littledog,

I just want to say that I know you are not a "newbie" per se. I only meant here. I can tell by a few of your posts that you are a knowledgeable recordist.

I'll admit, I may have went a little overboard in my post to you. It was late and I was pissed at your tone and the fact that I would be singled out as offensive out of all the people here. (I dont personally find ANYONE here offensive, BTW. I just know there are guys that go a lot further for a laugh than me.) I still hold my basic position and I still think you spoke down to me but I would have rather said so without name calling. I dont want to have a problem with you or you with me. After all we dont even know each other....its ridiculous, really.

For further reference. See Jets post. He agreed with you but in a less condescending way. INTERPRETATION: He thought it might be awkward at best. He said so and let me know I can fuck myself if I dont like it:D I can live with that.

I know this may seem a strange way to socialize over here. I didnt even think that people coming from other boards are used to a different way of dealing with things. For the record...I lurked here like an entire year and a half before I posted even once. Im not suggesting that you should too, BTW, I'm merely stating that this place can seem intimidating with the way it works. Its less like class and more like recess.:D ;)

One tip, littledog.....

Stay AWAY from the DRAGON CAVE if you find what I originally said offensive. And for God's sake, DO NOT read Speedemon's posts!!!!:D :D :D :D

As a matter of fact I have a couple "stupid-newbie" questions to post later. Just gotta pick the correct forum.

Sky Blue..........

I dont think there is any cause for concern as far as "newbie" questions here. I dont think I've ever seen anyone treated poorly over an honest question. Welcome aboard to anyone joining this forum....especially the orphans from RO. It sucks what happened there and I hope you guys find a home in this place.

Heylow is right. My posts are the sole factor that give the Cave that biker bar-flavour :D

Anyway, I'm very interested in the opinions about the AT 3035 as well. BTW, AT has come with a new mic, the AT 4040. I think it's the replacement maybe for the 4033... Has very good specs. Now the sound...

Heylow, you DO agree that my posts in the normal forums are pretty decent, right?

I've heard that MP3 several times in the last months.

It's excellent. Nothing more that I can add to that really.

I just bought one today and I think it's spectacular. My voice still doesn't sound good though(not the mics fault :()

I'm also interested in the 3035 except, for me, I'm not sure what to get next. Part of me wants to get something like the C3 for the multi pattern. I've got a couple of 4033's that I like and an NTK....kinda needing an all around LD condenser. Of course I'm also thinking about a Beyer Ribbon. What's a gear whore to do?!:( :p

Speed....just to clarify, I have zero problems with you or ANY of your posts anywhere. They usually make me laugh actually!!!There are a few truly colorful characters on this board and you are definitely one of em! Keep in mind though, I'm also the same guy that thinks beating his girl with a 414 is funny shit. :D

heylow

Don't worry Heylow. I'm with ya. Actually, I'd beat her with either an EV RE-20 or a Blue Bottle... And then stick the RE20 where the sun doesn't shine. :D
But seriously, if you already have 2 4033's and a NTK, what would you need the 3035 for? Wouldn't that be a bit of a step-down?
BTW, how DO you like the AT 4033's? Good on vocals, and ac.guitar? Have you tried it on guitar cabs as well?
I'm hung up between a AT4033-NT1000 and C1. (if the NTK REAALLLLLY sounds WAYYYYYY better, I might go with that)...

What are your thoughts?

speed demon,

different mics have different characteristics. i have U87's and lots of other nice mics, but i still sometimes use a C4000 or a 4033.

using the 3035 was an accident in my case (long story!), but it turned out real good in the end! dont be fooled by mic prices. try them.

Well,

I dont know if its a step down, per se. It just sounds llike a good deal from the price and what I've heard done with one...(see longwave's song, for instance.) I dont know what size the diapragm is.....thats the rub. See, the only LARGE diaphragm I still have is the NTK. The 4033's are technically more "medium" diaphragm. I dont know...like I said....I may go with something like the C3 just for the Multi pattern aspect just to get more out of a nice utility LD mic.

As for the 4033's, I CAN say I will never part with them. They are WAY too valuable to me. As overheads, they are SA-MOOTH! Guitar cabs....sweeeeet! Vox...very nuetral to my ears....does an EXCELLENT job of no nonsense vox. I havent tried it on acoustics though. The other day I used it as a room mic to capture a new song at band practice....worked wonderfully. These things are versatile, man!

The NTK...yes..a much different beast altogether. Another mic I cannot see parting with. There is something so cool about setting it up...with the power supply and all.;) Vox...RIPS!!! I tried it on a bass cab....very nice! I tried it once about 1.5 feet and then about 4 feet in front of a kick drum (slightly above) for a "front of kit" sound.....I will DEFINITELY be doing that again. Still havent tried it on acoustics though. I did place it in front of my guitar cab....Very cool for the right application....kinda raunchy, in a good way.

The only thing I've used on acoustics are the "in question" 414 that a friend let me borrow and the ECM8000. The ECM was OK. My bass player said that it sounded JUST like my acoustic. I liked it.

The 414 was honestly too bright. I dont like that mic much at all. My drummer is a "real" engineer and I help him in the studio from time to time. He is a big fan of a real "hyped" sound. He uses the 414 on lots of stuff and loves it....it all sounds hyped to me and sometimes irritating.

The only time I liked it was once he recorded me doing a very "whispery talked" vocal....think Elliott Smith. He just gave me a mix he did with a band. The singer I know to be excellent. I was in the studio when he did the vocal....it was down to the U87 and the 414. The U87 sounded SO good I nearly wet myself....very realistic and warm. They ended up using the vocal tracked with the 414 and I personally find it grating. He said they used it because it sounded so "real and lifelike." My response was, "Dude....if that dude were right here singing in my face....he'd sound nothing like that. And if he did, I'd bust him in the grill!" (I'm not making this one up!)We argue these things all the time.

hope this long ass post does something for someone:D

I held my 3035 up to my se electronics se1000 and it looked really small. Half the size I would say the diaphragm was. But I was just at audio-technica's website and it lists 26mm(1inch). So I guess now I have 1 large diaphragm, and one HUGE diaphragm.

Great post heylow! Very informative.
Have you used the C1 though?

What kinda guitar cabs (music genre) did you track with the 4033 btw? I'm doing mostly rock/metal....

Yo Speed....

No i havent used the C1 at all....I figured if I got a C anything, I'd get the C3 just to have the extra functions. I'm like that...otherwise I feel dumb later if I dont just bite the bullet for the whole deal. Kinda like I had the money for a Meek VQC1 (or whatever the leters are) but I realized that the stereo one is only about 150 to 200 bucks more so I'm getting that instead! (when I get the dough)

With the 4033, I mic'd my Allen....think Fender Combo. I use a pretty fair amount of distortion....it's rock, for sure....not quite metal though;)

I even tried it in conjunction with a 57...the 4033 being back a couple feet. This also worked well.

Since the debate here seems to be about mics in the $200 or so range, I'm wondering if anyone has been considering the Shure KSM 27, which is right around that price I think. I haven't heard it, but there seems to be a good buzz about it.

Have any of you 3035 fans had any inclination to look into that one as an alternative? I believe it has a legitimate 1" diaphragm (unlike the KSM32). I'm still a little confused about what size the 3035 really is.

The baby bottle also seems to be getting some good reviews as well, but perhaps that's a touch more than some of you are looking to spend.

heylow,

I know what you mean about almost wetting yourself over a u87,

I almost wet myself when I listen to some vocals that were cut with a u87. The mids sound like they are on fire.

With the c414, its like the singer is in your room. With the u87, the singer is in a different room, but you want to be in that room becuase it is so special.

by the way, listen to this cut done by another guy on a 414. This is maybe why they like it cos it is very present.

This vocal was done with a u87, and even though I cant stand the room she used, the vocal is off the hook.

Hey LongWave, very nice sounding vocals on that track! What kind of room the singer was in?!
