I've been recommending the ASUS CUBX mainboard as a good alternative to the many i8XX chipsets out there. If you are using one of these boards for audio applications, without problems, good. (if your using this board with a PIII and Photoshop - and it works, i'd like to know.)

----

I don't know that I can suggest it as being a great board anymore. There is a problem with this board and Adobe Photoshop 5.5. ASUS claims the problem was with the P3BF, and has been fixed, this is bullshit. When opening up large graphic files the machine will reboot or hang (do to a demand for voltage on the board, that it can't provide). This is a concern, because in audio we are also dealing with large files - so it now makes me a bit leary of this motherboard.

If your using this motherboard succesfully in a DAW, please let me know. If you took my suggestion, bought this board and it is giving you grief - sorry.

I don't know that this will be a problem with DAW's, but this experience with Photoshop on a customers machine certainly has lessened my opinion of ASUS.

One for work - one for play

I have been fortunate in that my graphics work is done on a machine dedicated to graphics - if only it were a mac. All digital audio is done on a totally seperate and different pc. Motherboards in each are probably antiquated bull dung.

I'll add. The solution to this problem is replacing the mainboard. Which I'm going to do, at my expense. How was I to know there was a problem with Adobe PS5.5 and ASUS? (as a sidenote, this is an older lady with not too many days left, I don't think she needs this crap) Who knows... but to write it off as.. "oh well tough luck" I can't handle that, too much for the customer, and far too complicated for resellers. I guess only ASUS and Adobe have little problems with guilt.

I got the ASUS CUSL2 Solano i815 motherboard installed last week to replace the board that blew up on my DAW. I run photoshop 5 (or 5 point someting) I havent had any hanging or rebooting while in it. At my work the "web dept." guys use P3B's (i think the P3B-F) and they all run photoshop, I havent heard any of them complain of any unstability problems with photoshop... maybe we're just lucky.. these machines are all dual booting with windows and linux os's installed though, i dont see how that could make a difference.

Well ASUS did correct it on the later revisions of the P3B-F by adding a big resistor to the board. Odd the problem surfaced again on a new board line. I'll look into that ASUS board you got, but I think I'm going to go with an ABIT BF6 and a slocket!!! card.

Thanks for the info.

I just thought that I'd add that the motherboard that blew up on me was a DFI board. I'll never get another one of those...

hmmm

I am getting ready to build a system and the choice of mobos is holding me up. I WAS going to go with the cubx based on the advice of Advanced Designs of Kentucky, but then I hear this...
They claim that the Iwill WO-2 is a superior board but it has integrated sound which scares me off...

So which is it???

Asus, Iwill, or Abit????
I need to choose soon.

New Info

Now it is looking like the favorite is the Abit bx-133 RAID...
Any contenders?

Update

Well, I just finished swapping the CUBX with an ABIT BF6, no format reinstall. Photoshop now runs like a dream, no hangs or reboots. So if your into graphic design, you may want to stay clear of the CUBX. As for audio, who knows.
