Assigning effects on Korg D8

Being a complete beginner, the Korg D8 user manual just leaves me even more lost than I am before reading...

I want to assign a built-in effect to one track, and then assign a different built-in effect to a different track in the same song.

Sounds simple, but I just can't work it out!!

I would like to be able to mess around with the effects after recording each track too, before mixing down.

Can anyone help - PLEASE!!!

:D Yo Tom:

I'm fairly sure that your Korg works in a similar fashion to my 2816.

So, you can put reverb on for the cans while recording and it WON'T be recorded on the track.

When you record ALL the tracks and are ready to mix, then you can assign a reverb program to a given track, like a vocal--need to call it up on the menu.

Then, if your box works like mine, you have one more choice for a different reverb--call it up on the menu and assign it to that track. I don't think you can do more than two reverbs assignments unless you re-run the tracks to a sub-mix and then work on that--but, I'm not sure how that works.

Someone here will know more about the Korg--OR go to the Korg site and ask the technies for help.

Assuming the D8 works the same as the D16:
Using Insert effects:
First you choose weather to assign insert effects to "input" or "play track". The you pick how you want to assign effects:
1in2outx2, 2in2outx2, 1in1outx4 or 1in1outx8.
Next pick what track to want to assign insert effects to.
I've found with the D16 though you can assign different effects depending on how you assign them.

Using master effect:
pick what effect you want to use and use the effect send to assign what channels the effect is on
I usually use the insert effect (1in1outx8) for compression and the 2 master effects for reverb. To make the master effect more usefull I set the reverb to hall and turn the volume in the effect send up as far as I like it.

May sound like rubbish but I hope it helps :)

With the D16 if you assign the effect to input then the effect will be recorded

Learn more every time I turn on the this site. Amazing how similar the SIABs are.

Don't let the dingos get ya.

You can't do it. That's one of the great limitations of the D8...one effect at a time. To accomplish what you're talking about you're going to have to do some track bouncing while applying effects.

You can apply A global effect, like a reverb or compression, to ALL or some of the tracks at once, but not different ones on different tracks. Good luck.

:D Yo Steverino:

Isn't it possible to run the mic into a preamp and the preamp out into an outboard FX box and select a reverb and record. Of course the reverb will be permanent and not adjustable; but, EQ will still be available when setting up the mix?

I'm not sure but I think it can be done. I've got a couple of outboard FX boxes so I guess I'd better try on my 2816 and see what happens.

PS I'm lazy so I use the FX on the 2816 most of the time.

Yeah Hornet, that's the way I did it. But when you do that you're stuck with what you record. On the D8 you'd still have the high and low shelving eq for each track but if you wanted to use the parametric eq you'd have to apply it globally or bounce it track by track...pain in the butt.

Another option for the D8 is to use the auxillary send and return to apply an effect to a track with an outboard unit but I was not able to get a decent signal that way.. wasn't worth the effort.
