Assembling New PC - Advice Sought

As I have 1169 posts to my name, I was aware that this is a sound recording site.;) :) I use my puter as a DAW.:cool: I was replying to Bluesmeisters post to me. And I did think that soundcards were hardware:D My Delta 66+omni definitely is:)

And unfortunately (or fortunately, whatever is your poison:) ), I am an Intel user. But thanks for the link.

Yes, I am aware of this Fusion2, and if you look at my top post you'll see the inclusion of a Terratec EWX24/96 soundcard and a 7200 rpm HDD. Hence I will be using my new system for Computer Recording.

I was also aware that Paul881 has an Asus P4PE motherboard and has been experiencing the dreaded Asus Cold Boot Problem. I feel I am duty-bound to help in any way I can if I know of a possible solution for a fellow Board Member.

I surfed over to Hynix web page and downloaded a PDF file that gave memory timings of 2.5, 3, 3, & 7 for my RAM.

I checked my BIOS and my memory timings are the same. Clever little BIOS :) Oh yes, my BIOS is v 1002, the latest is 1005

If your RAM is Hynix (or Hyundai - it's the same thing) then use those same timings. You can try increasing them to see if it alleviates the problem.

And your previous advice in another thread re-size of PS may have been prophetic. I had 8 spontaneous re-boots this morning while trying to copy data across from my 6.4GB drive. In the end I abandoned the exercise. I was told by the guy who sold me the case that 250 watts is more than adequate.

Hmm. I don't think so.

I don't think so either. QuietPC here in the UK rekon on 400 watts as a minimum for our sort of DAW setup. I'm pushing it a 300 watts, so 250...? Hmm.......:(

And thanks for the settings info. Thats exactly what my settings are. Quite where that leaves me, I don't know. I still feel mine is a power issue.

I think I'm running 300Watt, I thought 300 was standard. Obviously the guy doesn't build DAW's!!! Down the track if I expand my studio, I want to eventually record bands, even big bands (Swing/Jazz), so I want to put another 3 of my Edirol's in my PC. I'm going to have to upgrade the power supply.... 250 will get you away with most things... If you need to copy the data across, you could always unplug another device... such as CD ROM, PCI Cards etc.

I phoned the place where I purchased the hardware and they told me 300W was necessary for the P4. And no, you are quite correct, the guy who sold me the case doesn't build DAWs. :)

You may have a good point there Porter, because there was a CD-ROM in the drive, and it was whirring away during this exercise. Good thinking Batman. I'll try disconnecting the CD-ROM tomorrow and have another burl.

But I will be putting in a 300W PS sometime next week.

Paul, what else are you hanging off from your PC? Do you have a CD-RW? Is your monitor powered from your PC? (Mine isn't)

ok, no prob, i just was saying you may do better grathering info from a hardware site and when built come here for sure :) excuse the vagueness, it's one of those fuzzy hendrix days ;)

and i'm not saying a thing but anyone can post yeah to a thread and get a cookie :) no, i won't do a search of your post cause i don't care for flame and all that crap, you are most likely a musical guru, donno, but music is a collective of feelings and i feel good when i'm making it, just like most here, peace...

Well since the thread's been revived, I'll provide, for your collective benefit, the eventual outcome. :)

I bought and installed a 400W PS, that really seems to do the trick. So far no Cold Boot Issue.

All software reinstalled and working fine and dandy, except for...

HomeStudio2002 that still crashes on exit - even on my new P4 2.4GHz PC. :(

Now I have to get my arse into gear and do some recording...

Fusion2, you are perfectly entitled to your opinion and free to express it. Please try not to take it personally if your opinion isn't shared by others.

I downloaded the P4PE Bios version 1006 to upgrade my v.1001 and saved it to my floppy. But on restarting, the EZ Flash said that it can't find the new BIOS file on my floppy:confused:

So I sent an email to ASUS tech support:(
 
Mates... once I trusted them that 300W is enough... Not anymore.
But I didn't replace mine so soon. It was alot of salvaged older casing in my warehouse, I pick the one with 250W -running well-PS. Pull out the PS, and use it in my DAW as HD/CD drives PS... So... dual PS :cool: One for MB only (300W), and second for drives (250W). I dunno, I do not recomend this way, since it's not proven safe, but it is in my DAW :cool: I leave the left side case slightly opened to route the necessary cables into the drives...

...so, what's the point, Jaymz ?

I dunno... just like to share mine :D

Come on, Bluesy... the collaboration couldn't wait that long... :D

For what it is worth I think I'm only running 300W in my P4.... but for the time it is getting me past.... I know I'll have to upgrade in the future...

Watts are certainly important, but there is no magic number that makes it all work. 300W is more than adequate for a typical DAW, 200W is for that matter. The more devices you add drawing current, then the wattage rating may need to be higher.

Quality varies greatly. A cheapo generic 300W that comes with a case thrown in for free ain't gonna be a quality unit.

No need to break the bank. Buy a good powersupply for $50, enermax, young-year, powerman etc. Use the wattage rating for what it is.

You have to unzip the BIOS file onto the floppy before you can install it. :) Remember to save a copy of your previous BIOS onto the floppy in case anything goes drastically wrong...

BTW Paul, what revision is your Asus MoBo? Mine's 1.03 and the BIOS is 1002.

When it says "type in the exact name of the new BIOS file that is on your floppy", what they mean is exactly that:eek:
I was missing the extension:rolleyes: What a plonker!
Anyway, I now have the 1006 BIOS installed safely, using the ASUS EZ Flash utility which made it a breeze (once I had figured out about the file name:) )

Bluesmeister, I don't know what my mobo version is, I'll look next time.
Thanks for the heads up on the BIOS, version 6 was only released last Thursday. Lets hope it cures the Cold Boot problem:)
