Why do most grandfather clocks with Roman numerals use IIII for the number 4 when the Roman numeral for 4 is IV?

Because it falls under the 3rd rule of adjacent vowels making the SECOND vowel the long vowel.

It's kind of like that "i" before "e" rule. Do you know that one?

Well, for those of that don't:

"i" befor "e" expect after "c"
unless sounding like "a"
as in neighbor or sleigh
and weekends and holidays
and EVERY DAY IN MAY
AND YOU'LL ALWAYS BE WRONG
NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY!

It... it's a tough rule! :D
