the art VLA looks pretty good. I am looking for an outboard vocal and mix - limiter. is the Pro version actually better or is it just the addition of the level indicators?

I'm very happy with my Pro VLA as well. Most people who own one like it. It does give a thickening in the low mids that many refer to as tube warmth. I'm not sure what you are referring to as far as the other version. There was the Art Dual Levelar but I don't think they make it anymore.

I like 'em (the Pro VLA). Gotta say that I've heard a few horror stories on the later models though... If you get a good one, it's good. If you get a bad one... Let's just say that the "bad apples" have been making all the headlines.

But what a steal...

i think i could snag a dual levelar on ebay for about $100 less than the pro VLA.

that link didn't work........

I did a search on Massive Master and Pro VLA and posted the link. Don't know why it doesn't work now.

so nobody knows if the dual levelar is along the same lines as the VLA?

They're supposed to be different animals. The Pro VLA (and the MPA) got rave reviews, even going up against much more expensive units. And a lot of people hot rod them with killer tubes or a couple of mods that are floating around. ART also has a new comp out, the TCS II I believe, that is getting some good press (not just the hype the magazines get paid to feed us). That one's only a couple hundred quid, and it has several bells and whistles that make it stand way out of the pack in that price range!
