a good review in [x] magazine
Has anyone else noticed how most gear gets good reviews in recording/gear magazines? I think a piece has to be pretty atrocious to get a bad review, considering that if a magazine starts giving bad reviews to every piece of gear, they will eventually lose their sponsors (the gear makers), their free review gear (why would you send your gear to a magazine that consistently gave you bad reviews?) and ultimately their jobs. That said, I think most magazines give a good general sense of how good a piece of gear is, but unless they absolutely rave about something (and you will note they almost never do), that review and a 1.50 will buy you a cup of coffee. If YOU like the piece of gear, than good for you. If YOU don't, well that's also good. But don't take some shmuck at Gearfest magazine's review as gospel, or you will end up buying a lot of crap gear.
That said, I stand by what I said before. The Tube MP is good crap. It's not all crap, and it's not all good. It's a cheap tube preamp, good for crunching up vocals, for adding a little tube flavor, but it isn't worth more than the 89$ or so it goes for, and if it was, they would sell it for more. That's just my experience, and any time I record for a nice vocal quality, I go for the Meek or the Focusrite, and if I had more money, I'd grab a Neve or API pre. Don't think that if you could use any gear you want, it would be the ART Tube MP.
