It all depends on how you use it. as a mic pre it is rather good for the price.(dbx has just released a clone for 99.00 so check it out).I like to use one after my amp modeling unit for that tube sound, But I have replaced the stock tube with a groovetubes gt12ax7 because the tone is alot better. the modification only cost 11.00 and tottaly changed the sound.

yes, i would call it good crap. maybe even great crap. i use it when i need crunchy vocals. but it definitely sounds like $89 most of the time.

Acctually the tube mp is a very heavely reccomended piece of equipment in the "Recording for Guitarists" book I read today while at the bookstore.

A few of the more experinced guys arround here also like them. I use one in the signal path for tracking my guitar and bass. after the amp modeling. so theres alot of uses for it. So dont write it off after getting a new pre.

Oh by the way It also got a good review in the electronic musician this month.

It's not bad but if you get it replace to tube with a groove tubes tube, so it will not sound dull. The PreSonus Blue Tube is a better value because it has 2 channels for $160--the Art has 1 channel for $99. The PreSonus sounds smoother then the Art. Talk to "Sonusman" about the Art, he either has the Dual Art MP or a higher end Art.

a good review in [x] magazine

Has anyone else noticed how most gear gets good reviews in recording/gear magazines? I think a piece has to be pretty atrocious to get a bad review, considering that if a magazine starts giving bad reviews to every piece of gear, they will eventually lose their sponsors (the gear makers), their free review gear (why would you send your gear to a magazine that consistently gave you bad reviews?) and ultimately their jobs. That said, I think most magazines give a good general sense of how good a piece of gear is, but unless they absolutely rave about something (and you will note they almost never do), that review and a 1.50 will buy you a cup of coffee. If YOU like the piece of gear, than good for you. If YOU don't, well that's also good. But don't take some shmuck at Gearfest magazine's review as gospel, or you will end up buying a lot of crap gear.

That said, I stand by what I said before. The Tube MP is good crap. It's not all crap, and it's not all good. It's a cheap tube preamp, good for crunching up vocals, for adding a little tube flavor, but it isn't worth more than the 89$ or so it goes for, and if it was, they would sell it for more. That's just my experience, and any time I record for a nice vocal quality, I go for the Meek or the Focusrite, and if I had more money, I'd grab a Neve or API pre. Don't think that if you could use any gear you want, it would be the ART Tube MP.
