hey, i'm thinking of purchasing the art tube MP and the alesis nanocompressor. few questions:

1. do i need any special cables to hook them up to a standard mixer with 1/4" line ins? i mean, can the cables be 1/4", or do they have to be balanced?

2. how does the alesis nanocompressor compare to the art levelar tube compressor?

3. what is the best way to set them up to ensure the least amount of noise, because i hear that the tube MP produces some small amount of noise.

thanks a bunch to those who reply

I have a nano compressor. I thought it sounded ok. I found this site... read A LOT of other peoples opinions... bought a Behringer Composer... now I don't use my nanocompressor for much other than ... well... a paperweight. Ok I do use it occasionally. That's just my 2 cents though.

You would want to use your ART MP directly into your tape machine not your board...This will make give you the least amount of noise .Also use your compresser in the same way the order would be mic to the preamp to the compresser to the record in of a track on your recorder .The nano comp is something that I've never used so I can't realy comment on that.If you want to hook up a compresser to a board for compressing during your mix or for tracking thru the board then you might want to get some "insert cords"

the RCN is often called the best compressor in the sub 500 range (and often more) and this is pretty much deserved.. check it out, it's about $170... you'll be happier in the long run with that than the alesis or art compressors... the art tube mp is actually very popular around hear as a good tube preamp for very little money... pretty much everything will add noise, but as far as i know it's not perticuarly noisy itself

how do i plug the tube MP in without going through the board? im a little confused there

What kind of recorder are you useing??Look at it and see if you have record ins and if you have tape outs

im gonna either be going in to my fostex d-90, or straight into my computer. what im thinking of doing is running through a bi-amp board to the d-90, and then mix down the finished work from the d-90 through the mixer to the computer, and burn cd's from their.

i think the mixer has 3 aux send/returns, 1 tape out, 24 channels

I belive that the D 90 is the 8 track hard disk recorder... then you I belive that you have 8 different record ins on the machine.. track 1 .. record input jack 1 ,track 2.. record input jack 2 and so on this is wear you feed the tracks sound.. this could be in the D90 manuel...Then you have your record outs from the machine it follows the same as the ins but these are the outs..1 and 2 and so on these are what you hear the indivigual tracks on the machine. So if you want to record on track 1 with the Art MP and a compresser.. then you plug the the mic to the preamp plug the output of the preamp to the input of the compresser the output of the compresser to the track 1 input of the D90 then you monitor the sound thru the output jack 1 of the machine plugged into your board .I'm not sure about your board as how to best hook it up to your recorder...I havent seen a Biamp in a while. Some of the guys here can proboby give you a better explanation than I can (split monitoring/group or buss feeding the signal to the machine)Good luck

turtle - With the ART getting things up to line level, you can bypass the board, and go straight to your recorder from the ART. Plug the out of the ART into the in of your recorder. Of course, I haven't actually done this mysef, but if I'm wrong, I'll buy you lunch next time we get together. :)

skweeks, do you mean the RNC?

For information on the FMR Audio, RNC compressor, go here:
http://www.fmraudio.com/

They will sell it direct for $180. For $175, you can get it from Mercenary Audio (www.mercenary.com). There may be cheaper places out there.

How does the RNC compare with the Behringer Composer Pro which also comes highly recommneded?

from what i hear, the rnc can be put to the test against other $1000+ compressors. im thinking about not getting the nanocompressor and getting the rnc

I tried all the dogs (alesis, dbx etc) and all the kats (presonus, RNC, etc) and no matter what rnc sez, under $500 there can be only one, highlander- try the Drawmer MX30 - Drawmer sound on a budjet with two sets of controls - you can even sidechain by masterlinking and using channel 1 as the trigger and ch2 as program - also very intuitive and it has the only one knob gate that I've ever seen actually work well!
