Wondering which of these entry level channel strips gives me the best bang for the buck recording just vocals? I'm most interested in the preamp section of the strip. Im going to be connecting to a M-Audio Firewire 1814 using a AT4040 mic..

I own both the Art and 6Q.

The Art offers some nice subtle coloration. The comp can be a little slow, but the EQs are decent. An often overlooked strip, that is actually very decent.

The 6Q is the best sounding budget strip I've heard under $500. The pre is transparent and fat and is the closest you will get to a Vintech Neve clone, without dropping a lot of money. It's that good. The comp is on the aggressive side, but still very usable and works well on electric gtrs and snare. The EQs are also very musical. Another plus is that the pre can be used with the input transformer kicked in or out, for a slightly different sound. My only critisism is that they did not use fasteners to secure the jacks, which is pretty stupid.

At under $350, you might want to pick up a couple of these units, which is what I did.

Although I still haven't heard the new joemeek line, I have several of the old line and love them, especially on vocals. I use a little bit of compression to level my levels a little on the way in because I am still a little sporadic with my volume when singing and have not mastered the art of pulling back from the mic in heavier vocal passages. Therefore, the comp section is very important to me on a channel strip, and joemeek compression has a wonderful sound. I also own an ART VLA that I love the sound of, but that is for compressing before going into the mixdown deck. I've never used the Pro Channel or their pres.
