Are these anomalies?

Studio One v4

1) See pics. I have the bass track selected for editing, but the window below shows the bass data mixed in with the drum data.

2) I have tracks containing both MIDI and audio - which is it, how do I edit that.

It looks like you recorded the bass audio on the same track as the drum MIDI data. You need to record the bass on a new track. But for now, you should be able to select the bass audio and copy and paste it into a new track.
 
Looks like - but isn't. That's piano MIDI data with the resulting piano audio on top. It happens fairly frequently but not every time, so I suspect it happens when certain conditions are present but I can't think what they might be.
