Hi I use Cubase LE and have read through the manual (well the parts that apply to my question) and have found no answers, and I was hoping you guys could help. I was wondering how to apply an effect, say autotune, and have it active while Im recording. I want to be able to hear it while Im recording rather than use it post recording. Ive tried to open it in the send effects but that didnt do anything. Thanks for any help!

That's going to depend on how your monitoring chain is set up. You need to use Direct Monitoring rather than monitoring from your interface. Direct Monitoring is listening to the playback after it's gone through Cubase and all effects assigned to that channel. I'm not positive, but I think the interface has to be capable of supporting Direct Monitoring.

You have to monitor through cubase, so that means turning off direct monitoring on your interface. Direct monitoring allows the signal to go from your interface directly to your output (speakers etc). Without direct monitoring, you hear the sound after it is recorded or processed by cubase. This can introduce latency, but you need to have direct monitoring off on your interface, or adjust the direct monitor knob to 0 (however it is set up on your interface).

Then arm the track and set input monitoring on. Now you will hear the processed sound as cubase outputs it. However, some effects don't work this way such as Autotune or Melodyne. These special effects need to be feed your recorded material, they can not be used in real time.

For the track on which you want to enable monitoring, simply click the monitoring button. It's a round button with a little "speaker" icon on it. Once you do this, you will hear the inserts, etc. in real time as you play.

You probably want to turn down or mute direct monitoring, or else you'll hear that as well. Also, as has been mentioned, if you don't have a powerful enough PC, the real time effects will cause latency.

Oops, I got it backwards. :o But Direct Monitoring allows Cubase to control the output of the audio interface, level, panning, etc (per Cubase SE3 manual).

I never use it, so forgot what it did. Thanks for setting me straight.
