download "apocalypse now"

this is a 6 minute snippet of a 67 minute-long instrumental collaboration with False Haruspex, you can find them here:
http://tinyurl.co.uk/wqak

this features Gregory Straathof and David Lamden on bass and drums.....
gonzo on guitaristic noise.

the visual should be along these lines.....

"apocalypse now, think col. kurtz' palace on the nung river - tiki torches burning, bodies hanging from trees at the river's edge, heads on stakes, etc."

;)
njoy.

Finally a Nowhereradio.com link I can actually download....(I can never seem to stream these either)......That frustration aside.....

Amazing clarity on the instruments - is this live?????? Yea or Nay, how did you record this?

67 Minutes of this would make an epic album..... in the genre of Yes and Floyd...takes you back to the seventies when musicians were actually musicians....

Outstanding as always Mr Gonzo - love the variety you have on the guitar - sustains, wahs, bends etc...Can you tell us a bit about the rig you used?

Totally enjoyed this 6 minutes of music!

Please pass my compliments on to the drummer and bass player also......

:) :D :) :D

This is killer!Fantastic sound quality.
I''d like to hear more 'verb on the snare and toms.
Great piece of writing!

Pretty fuckin cool. I agree about the reverb. The drums sound a lot closer then the cymbals.

wow, 1st guy out of the gate!
thanks for checking it out, and commenting...

some background to this track:
these two guys in british columbia, sent me data backups of bass guitar and drums.... a continuous song, for one hour and 7 minutes.
yikes!
it's a long instrumental.. :D
the idea is, different people will collaborate on it over a period of time.
i'm just the first guy, of hopefully many, that will put their own stamps on it here and there......

i just took a 6 minute section that i just enjoyed the guitar tone on, mostly, and did a quick mixdown....
could be, that keys, or other guitars, or percussion, end up going all over the top of this..
but i thought it'd be kinda cool, to mix it down plain and unadorned, just like a basic 3-piece would sound...

this section of the song, is kinda free form, and it has bits and pieces of sections that are more throroughly explored at different times during the entire piece.
not very good example of the whole, by itself though...
you get the wrong idea, just hearing this one section.
but, whatever.

the bass and drums were recorded live, i believe, probably the kit is all miced up with the bass player going direct.
they certainly did it in sections.

my part, is simply done....
a miced 1x12 cab, strat into Barber Direct drive SS pedal, into boogie, into cab, into mic, thru preamp, into recorder.
played just loud enough, to get some interaction between the guitar, which wants to sing, and the cab, which i stood pretty close to.

i mixed delay and reverb onto the guitar on mixdown, so a combination of room sound and the effects i put on give it the bigger 'room' sound.
i take the delay, and mix it hard right, the reverb, and mix it hard left, and that gives a pseudo 'stereo' spread.

the way, is a standard Crybaby.
the strat, is my custom made USACG cream strat with a bill lawrence humbucker in the bridge.
see pic...

hey bubba!
thanks for the kind words......
the drums, kinda came already mixed on my background tracks...
i DID add a bit of cathedral reverb, very lightly, to the overall drum tracks, trying to get to basically what you suggest, but it'd be a lot more obvious going back to the original tracks and putting them on there....
great piece of writing, hm, maybe on the bass player and drums part, for me, it was pure wanking, a first take effort! LOL
in other words, i winged it.....

TexRoadkill-
glad you liked it.
i'll pass on the suggestions to the drummer, so they can decide how they want to tweak the final product.

my guess is, they'll wait until all collaborators have put their two cents in, then figure out soundwise what works best.

thanks for listening!

Nice & trippy. Very post Canterbury UK Prog. I'd love a few of the metal heads who think they prog to listen to this & get a clue about what prog was/is about.
Suggestions:
Only one - MELLOTRON & lots of it.
Loved it - An instant placement in my psych/prog file for loud playing.

rayc---
MELLOTRON!

LOL

yeah, that'd work here.....

back in a minute...

kind of reminded me of Godspeed You Black Emperor!, but with more balls.

i like it.

Lifes a fallacy-
hey, thanks for checking it out..
i'd never heard of Godspeed before, so i hunted them down, very cool project that was....

i'm not sure what this is for, the long instrumental, unless it's simply for the fun of it...
i could see someone taking certain sections of this thing, and applying it to a soundtrack, though there's nothing behind the story except a long dissertation that the false haruspex guys sent me to use as a 'go-by' for visualizations of the different sections.
i could post what they sent me, but i'd rather give them a chance to work with everyone else that will be on the project first.

this, of course, is just a first pass, with only my stuff..

these guys are going to get other collaborators, on their end, to add, jeez, who knows what else..

so this is not representative of the final product, only a simple mix with only my tracks added to the basic bass and drums i recieved...

The first things that jumped out at me were the drums. The attack of the snare compression should be adjusted; the compression is starting too late. The cymbals sound slightly out of phase at times. The kick needs more balls in the real low end; maybe a boost at 30 hz and 60 hz. The drumming itself is well done. The bass and guitar sound great to me sonically.

hey fattmusiek
thanks for checking it out....

the drums, i'm sure, will be properly mixed at the final mixdown.

all i had sent to me, was a 'go-by' mix, to do my stuff.....
it's a stereo mix, that was pretty much dry..... and i through a little bit of processing on it just for my little temporary mix.....
the bass was already premixed as well, but i tweaked it a bit also....
i suppose, they'll wait til they get all collaborators' info, and then figure out where the drums need to sit.
there's no point in eq'ing drum parts, til everything has been tracked.

the guitars, i tried to track as flat as possible, so they won't have to second guess the eq on that at mixdown as well.

and i totally agree with you about Cables.

LOL :D
