Apl and I have collaborateded on a version of Neil Young's "Old Man".

Me - guitars, mandolin, and bass.

Apl - vocal

Old Man

I think the vocal may sits a bit too low in the mix and I'm sure there are other issues. Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

The timing on the vocals seems a little off, like they're a bit ahead of the music at times. Bass could be louder IMO.

Nice sounds....but it does sound like the vocals aren't quite in synch with the music at times...but still nice job sounding a good bit like Neil......

same here. would be a fine cover if the vocals were on time.

Arvo did mention that he might be having some latency issues with his soundcard, so a retracking of the vocal might be required.

Thanks for the feedback! I anticipated comments about timing issues.

Thanks guy! :)

To go along with his latent homosexuality! :D
No need to retrack, just move them wav files around. That's what I do.Much easier to click a mouse than actually perform!
I'm the laziest man alive!

The vocals are very Neil Young-ish APL. I think its the closest to the real thing I've heard on this forum. The guitar playing and tone are great. It feels like the vocals are being rushed, like the tempo was too fast and the vocals are trying to keep up. Good choice for a song - both playing and vocals well suited to this...

:) :D :) :D

Great sound/playing on the guitars/Mandolin sound fantastic....vocals are definitely in the Neil Young vibe, but, as has been mentioned, the cadence/rhythm of the lyrics seems kinda outta wack...

It's faster than I expected. The chorus seems kinda rushed.

Music is class, very nice layer of sounds there! Cool move swapping the banjo for mandolin. I was expecting the pedal-steel pre chorus! :)

60s has straightened out the timing and it sounds much better. I was getting despondent.

Cool vocals man! Put in that bit on lapsteel though, you know the bit, the 'drrriiiiinnnnngggg' bit.

Well then it wasn't that far off I guess

The April 2 version sounds nicely in sync anyway..... :) :) :) :)

Listening to the new mix (on headphones cause it's late).

Guitar sounds good. It has that good "raw" sound. Doesn't sound processed.

Vocals sound good but distant and not up-front enough. Timing sounds good, and no real pitch problems that I can hear.

I didn't recognize this song by name but after hearing it I know it. I love this song.

What kind of guitar was used in this recording? And what microphone? If you don't mind me asking.

Bring the vocals up a little more. I might also try some reverb on the vocals or the whole mix. Not a lot, just a little to bring them together. Right now it sounds like the guitar and vocals were tracked separately.

I'm also listening on headphones, so take this with a grain of salt. :p But I would still add some verb to the mix and try to glue the vox and guitar together. It's obvious to me that they were tracked separetely.

Great track. All the parts sound good as does the arrangement.

Very personal sounding. That's better than having perfect intonation on the high notes.
