Hey gang!

Last summer at Swannanoa, I took a Swing rhythm guitar class from Mike Dowling, and when I got home I did this little exercise to work out my 10th chords... It's just a happy little 12-bar blues in G; with the changes goosed a little to appeal to my jazzier side. The drums are a loop, and I did the 2 rhythm parts and bass part. There's no melody or solos at all; it's a blank canvas for you jammers and scatters....

BASIC CHANGES (I have a few tritone substitutions and planing, but it does not disrupt the below):

||: G9 | C9 | G9 | G9 | C9 | C9 | G9 F9 | E9 | Am7 | D7 D7/C | Bm7 E9 | Am7 D9 Ab7 :||

Fade vamp:
||: Bm7 E9 | Am7 D9 :||

Have at it, and have fun! Can't wait to hear what you do!

If it wasn't for my nic going to crap a couple of days ago I would have already. I'll give it a shot but don't expect anything good. :D

Hey Travis...I thought that was pretty cool man!Really liked your tone and some tasty phrasing in there....nice!

I really dug this groove so thought I would take a bit of a stab at it....really fun to jam on!!!Big thanks to Llarion for putting this up....now here is my sloppy version :p :

Ok Llarion, I managed to fumble thru this like a monkey in a subway. I don't like it but oh, there will be a round two. :p

Where's yours? and it better not be good............this is why I hate jazz guitarists (they're too good). :D

YEAH, baybay!! SWEET, man! Kicks my ass. I can't solo my way out of a paper bag. I'll be anybody's rhythm section; I get more enjoyment out of that anyway... :) (That's why I farm out my solos on my own stuff; hiring the likes of Pete Huttlinger to do my solos makes me sound better! :))

Great!!

Wicked! Heavier and brawny! and the clean stuff is fun too! You experimented with a lot of fun styles! You and Travis should battle! :)

Man I hear at least 50 wrong turns in that solo. I'm working up to another but it might take a little while to get more familiar with the progression. I learned to solo over typical rock stuff like zz top, ac/dc, etc.

You can come up with a progression like that but you can't solo? You're kidding right? I bet you could if you worked at it. Who's this Pete Huttlinger? A jazz player?

Yes, I can come up with progressions like that in my sleep. But if you've listened to any of my music, you'll note that "free-spirited" is not among the adjectives you could use for it. It's all tight dense, almost micrometerd from an arranging perspective, not particularly risky, except in the occasionally weird chord turn; but yeah, I can't solo. I don't have enough facility on a fretboard or keyboard to navigate the changes I write with any coherency. I can do it in my head, but I'm years away from a chops perspective, and I lack the self-discipline to really sit and do it. Significant character flaw, yes, but for some reason, in all of my musical experience, I've gotten the most joy out of lush harmony, and tight arranging. SO, I got good at that part.

I'm trying, though. :)

Ah, Pete Huttlinger. A great way to introduce you is through a song of mine that he does the 2 solos on:

And then, a video of him (You're not gonna believe it.):

Llarion, that guy can play. He plays that stuff the way it's suppose to be played. :D

Are you saying that you write this stuff but don't play it?

No, on that first Link (Abby), I'm playing everyting except the two guitar solos in the middle, which are Pete. I can *play*, I just can't *improvise*...

Well I couldn't write a nursery rhyme so we're even. :p

You'd probably be surprised at what you could do. I'm sure if I sat down in the woodshed for a couple of months, I could manage to improvise a little. I did so on keyboards on a few of the tunes on my first CD; but I'm least comfortable with guitar of the instruments I play...

I'd stay out of the woodshed. True-eurt hangs out in there with a paddle in hand waiting for unsuspecting victims. :D

I think you're right. I bet you could improvise with a little time dedicated to it. Now with me and writing, I'm usually throwing something out before I really get started. Maybe I should quit doing that and just carry on thru, for better or worse.

Absolutely true. (eurt?) You should just carry through. Idaes start as just that; it's never perfect on the first pass. Lyrics are contiunally refined, as are melodies, harmonization...
