Anyone want to critique a raw drum track?

I can hear the work you must've put into making this sound good at the tracking stage. It won't be hard to get a really good sound out of these tracks with your normal mixing tricks I'm sure. Nice playing too. I'm very interested in what mics you used, the mic placements, and what drumset you're using. Be sure to post the a finished mix!

It sounds pretty good. Just to be a nit picker there is a ringing under tone in the low end. It sounds like one of the drums is resonating from the ambient vibrations. Sometimes that is caused from reflections off of a wall.

yeah, only problems i can hear is the some low mid on the bass resonating. otherwise it sounds great. maybe a little overloading on the lower toms... but altogether sounding right on

For raw drums, they sound damn good, man. How many mics, and where? Good punchy sound right now.

Sounds good - especially like tone of the snare and cymbals. What's the room size and treatment? Got any pictures?

+1.....................

Thanks for all the responses!

As far as what was used -

It's a Pearl Masters Custom Kit, played by an excellent drummer, in a 1000 sq ft "great room" in my house. Vaulted cielings and lots of wierd angles and built in "diffusors" (3/4 walls, kitchen island, etc..). I put some absorbing panels behind the kit, and some out in front against the nearby kitchen island, and covered the top of the island with egg carton foam.

The kit had 14 mics total, although two were muted in the sample (hat and ride mics - they will only be used if some accents parts aren't breaking thru the mix)

The main sound is coming from 6 mics.

ATM23HE on the snare top, EV nd868 on the kick, two KM184's overhead thru a api 3124 - then two gefell UM92's in an "sorda" XY about 12 feet out and 7 feet up running into a GR mp-2nv. All this runs into an apogee ad16.

The two rack toms have 4033's running into my ghost pre's and the two floor toms have mxl 603's running to the ghost as well. One shure sm57, underneath the snare. Finally, there is a royer r121 out front of the kick going into a Peavey VMP-2.

The sound is 99% coming from the drums, the drummer, and the room. In fact, I will post a sample of just the room mics raw, it actually sounds pretty amazing. I will also post a couple pics too.

Thanks again! :D

I would have guessed it was a pretty big room. The highs sound spacious as opposed to that small-room-treated-to-reduce-reflections kind of sound.

Nice work man.
Funky and clever
I really like the sound of your hi-hat.
The kit sounds very nice and tuned.

Who`s playing? My compliments on great drumming. :)
