Anyone using a Sempron 3100+? It's different from the rest of the Sempron line - actually an A64 without the 64 bit mode enabled, and the L2 cache reduced to 256M. It has the onboard mem controller of the A64, which really sets it apart from the other Semprons. Seems to be benchmarking up there with 2.6Ghz Northwood P4s.

i'm a computer engr and very impressed with it from my testing.
but some of my fellow teks feel if you can get a true amd 64 for not a lot more money...then the 64 might be a better long term buy.
imho with the right drives, mainboard etc etc youll have a pretty great daw.
but do your own testing like ive done.
the benchmark to beat is an amd 64 took 3/4 secs to noise gate a 3 minute stereo audio file. pretty darn fast.
if you want to make a sempron fly try fast hard drives with 8 mb cache for example. have not had a chance to test it with 15k drives. only 7200 rpm.

Good answer Manning, since I just got the ship confirmation from tiger direct. I'm comming from PIII 700 land, so this should be a LARGE performance increase for me for a very modest cost. And since it's a socket 754, I can upgrade to an Athlon 64 3700 up the road when they come down in price, and when 64 bit support is prevalent in both OS and apps.

Thanks,
RD

I have experience with the 2400+ Semp, and it's pretty good. Effectively it's an Athlon 2100+. That's how the bios on the Shuttle board read it.

It performs nicely.

robert.thanks.
when you get the 3100, maybe post some performance tests.
ie...how many tracks does it bug out at.
you SHOULD get a boatload. 40 plus at least.
just curious if you get the same stats as ive tested.
peace.

Ok, got the Sempron 3100+ running on a Chaintech SK8T800 Socket 754 Motherboard, 1 gig Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz CL2.5, no overclocking or bios tweaking, XP pro, running Samplitude Professional. My 32 track test file (16 mono tracks, 16 stereo tracks, eq and compression on every track and a handfull of plugins) never exceeds 20% CPU and 25% disk usage. This is damn good performance from a budget system that I'm embarrassed to say how little I paid to put together. Too early to make a call on the stability, but so far it's behaving itself perfectly. I would put this combo way up high on the bang for the buck scale, especially givin the ability to drop in an A64 3700 down the road when they drop from the current $500 avg price.
Standard disclaimer, YMMV,
RD
