Channel Inserts for inputs only-use Send & Return as Digital Insert
The channel Inserts are only or inserting processors on Inputs(Mic & Line) not Returns(T-Dif, Lightpipe etc). Though the T-DIF is technically an input, the DM-24 treats them as tape returns(in the traditional sense). The DM-24 does allow you to configure your Assignable Sends and Returns as "Digital Insert" points. This is a very cool feature on the DM. You do this on the Assign page. Start by hitting the Shift key so it stays lit and then hit key #2 on the keypad. Next hit the 4th encoder button directly under the display screen where it says Assign Sect. You do have to sacrifice your an Assignable Send(s) and Return(s) to do this but it is worth the trade off so you can insert your favorite analog gear into the digital signal path. You can choose any of the 4 Assignable Send and Return 1/4" jacks to insert into any indiviualchannel or Tape Return channel(depends on the choice made in the Input Output section) or even the Master Left / Right output busses. The configuration of the inserts does depend on how you have your Aux sends set up. For example, if you are using Aux 3 and 4 to feed your onboard effects, it will prevent you from changing it into and insert point.
In my set up I use
Aux 1&2 is either a monitor mix for headphones or analog inputs @mixdown
Aux 3&4 feed the on board effects
Aux 5&6 feed the Assignable Sends 1&2 (the physical 1/4" jacks)
I set up Assignable Sends 3&4 as my digital inserts and assign them to the Left and Right Master Buss. This allows my to insert my favorite Analog compressor into the mixdown path.
**Don't forget to turn on the Insert Point on the right side of the screen and set it for Pre fader.
Good Luck
