Anyone successfully using Delta, VIA and PA9?

I could use some help from all of you Cakewalk geniuses.
I've spent the past few days searching the web for solutions to this problem, but none of the suggestions work.
When using a Delta soundcard, I get a static/crackle on random takes. I can never tell when it will happen, and it is very frustrating to lose a good take this way. It doesn't seem to matter what sampling rate I use. I've tried every buffer setting I could think of, and nothing works, although some of them result in fewer bad takes because of crackle. Oddly, it only does this in Cakewalk. I can record all day in Wavelab or Cubase without a hitch, so I'm assuming that the ASIO drivers work well, but the Windows drivers don't. I'm using the latest Delta drivers, but I've tried all of them, without success. Here's my setup

Abit KX7-333R (the raid is disabled in the BIOS)
Athlon XP 2000+
1 GB PC100 RAM
Maxtor 7200rpm hard drives, a seperate one for audio
Windows 98SE

Reading your post over and over... I think you could be right. There's something wrong with Windows driver (WDM ?) Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall Windows ? Or put Delta on another PCI slot ?

Yes, I've done both, and the Delta is on it's own IRQ. M-Audio is saying now that there is a problem with the Windows driver, but they apparently are not planning to do anything about it. The last driver they released for Win98 was about a year ago.
 
Lemme tell ya sumthin' man... By the time you jump into XP, there would like day and night difference. Not that I insist you, but your music does need better treatment. Doesn't it ? :)
 
I'm tired of giving money to Microsoft. A lot of my programs are older, and I'm not sure how many I would have to upgrade to use XP or 2000. Do you know if Pro Audio 9 will run under XP, and would it use better drivers?
 
Oh... sorry, thought you were using Sonar. Then an upgrade would be justified.
 
I know how you feel, buddy. I've been there also. I had to convince my wife to buy SONAR 2XL. She didn't understand why would I have a new "multitracking" program for $399 since I already had CWPA9 works great for years. But trust me, XP/2000 is alot better (...and so SONAR:) ). Not only for audio work, but for almost every desktop apps. You'll spend much more time to concern about your music rather than your setup. (It should be that way, unless you are like me and moskus, spend too much time in this forum than in our music... :D ) I really concern, because you did pick a good soundcard for your demand, but without OS supported, you might achieve less than what you deserve :( .

Do you know if the drivers under XP are better than those under Win98SE?
 
Not necessary if you're just using MME-drivers. If you upgrade to WinXP/2000 and Sonar (eh...), you can use either ASIO or WDM-drivers.
 
I was afraid of that. I guess I'll have to raise more money. Times are tough. Thanks for the advice.

Well, I think CWPA9 will handle WDM (?) with XP...

Godh, I don't remember this... :(
 
I'm downloading the Sonar demo now. Oddly, Cakewalk's website doesn't list the system requirements for Sonar. Now I have to convince my wife that this is something I need.
