I'm looking for 4-6 in (xlr or trs), and 4 out mixer with preamps to sit in front of the delta 44 I'm going to buy.

Is there anything available for around $200?

I've trawled through Musicians friend looking at the Behringers, Yamahas, Alesis and low end Mackies. Most of the mixers in my price range only have 2 outputs, but they've got a whole bunch of extra crap that I don't need. I'm not interested in stereo inputs, aux buses or 3-band eq. I just want preamps and 4 outs.

Any recommendations?

Any mixer with channel inserts should work fine for your purposes. Instead of taking the main buss outs from the mixer to your soundcard, you can plug a TS (unbalanced 1/4") cable halfway into the channel insert and tap the signal from there to your soundcard. So find a mixer with four XLR inputs and channel inserts for each of them.

By convention, the channel insert comes after the gain (or trim), but before the EQ or fader, so you're getting pretty much the straight preamp output there.

Using inserts this way gives you an unbalanced connection, so you should avoid cable runs of more than three feet or so, and avoid routing them near AC power cords.

The suggestion to use two Audio Buddys has some merit, but I've found that using a real mixer is much more convenient, because it can be used to monitor the signal you're recording without fussing with ASIO direct monitoring or latency issues.

Alternatively, look at the Yamaha MG12/4. Using stereo out on 2 tracks and the group buss on 2 more will give you what you need, (as will the use of the insert jacks as deafen said). Alternatively useing the aux sends offers another 2 channel out - that way you can monitor all 4 channels. I think the preamps are good and clean and so so people who know better than me. Also you can do lots of other things with it which you might come to appreciate later.

I looked at a lot of low end mixers when I upgraded from a Behri recently and the Yammie was head and shoulders ahead.

Thanks for the replys.

Yeh the buddies are still an option, but if I was going that route I'd probably just go for a 4 or 8 channel preamp.

I'll check out that Yamaha as well. That might be the best bet

That Yamaha MG12/4 looks like what I want.

Do you know if it will work with a 230V power supply, or will I need a transformer to convert to 110V?

The Mackie mixers have a solution for this with the Alt 3/4 buss. You can sent two of the signals to the mains. The other two signals can be routed through the mixer. If you press the mute switch, the signal is routed to the Alt 3-4 buss. That way you can route 4 discrete signals through the mixer. Actually you can route 2 more discrete signals through the two aux sends.

Since you are getting a Delta 44, why not instead get a M-audio OMNISTUDIO? This has delta 66 card and has mixing capabiliteis for 6 INS and 8 OUTS. This also has 2 pre-amps. This way you wont need an external mixer.

I bought the Yammie here in London and it's set for 230v.

amt's suggestion might be better though.....

Thanks for the suggestion amt.

I checked out that omnistudio, and it's a pretty good deal for $379 but it only gives me 2 preamps. For another 20 bucks I can get the delta 44 and Garry's Yamaha mixer and I get 4 pres, plus the mixer could come in handy. I think I've just talked myself into it...

Soundcarft E-series is also a good deal. I think the E8 can be had for a little more than $300 new.
