Two methods come to mind:

1) reverse the track, add a long trailing reverb, mixdown the vocal track, reverse the mixdown vocal track, play

2) make a long scream, same note as lead note of lyric, automate the fader from -infinity to desired level.

or just some track automated volume to go really loud while everything backs off for a second.

This is what is commonly known as "preverb". Do this:
1) Record the vocal dry.
2) Cut the first word of the line loose and move it away from the rest of the track.
3) Reverse that word.
4) Apply reverb to only that word.
5) Mixdown just the word and the reverb.
6) Import the reversed word + reverb audio file.
7) Reverse that file.
8) Now you have one word with the reverb before instead of after the vocal. You can automate this process so that the reverb only kicks on the the last part of the word if you want.

check out the intro on this song....I did the same thing but with the symbols rather than vocals....and it was just as David and Halion described...

Thanks Halion that worked perfect. definately worthy of some rep points. Thanks to the rest also i just think halion described it the best.
