I've been looking, in vain, for somewhere to discuss musical theater composition and lyric writing.

Well, it looks like there aren't a lot of us. I'll start with a question:

I'm a [mediocre] keyboard player, when I compose, I "hear" my compositions fully orchestrated. For this reason, I find myself working with multiple synths/samplers/VSTs. Though it's gratifying to hear a more-or-less complete work, it's not the fastest way to work. On the other hand, playing with the orchestration up front lets me say more with the music than if I just wrote a piano reduction (which wouldn't be very good -- as I said, I'm only a mediocre keyboard player). Still, with music functioning as an actor, I don't know any other way to do it than by orchestrating as I go.

What does everyone else do?
 
I'm also a mediocre player, and I also hear full orchestration in my head.

I also use a lot of VSTis.

I start usually with a piano-based chord structure, then add the principal melody line.

Following that, I started constructing the arrangement, its level of complexity depending on how I think it will be performed.

Once I've got vocal and instrument parts sorted out, I then try to find a more competent keyboard player to provide a more accomplished accompaniment.

When I'm doing stuff like this, I often revert to working in Logic, because of its scoring capability.

When the overall arrangement is sitting well, I print the score to a PDF, then it's ready to go to whoever has to play it for real.
