It has:
Pre Amp
XLR inputs/
USB outputs (for audio)
Phantom Power

I don't think M-Audio makes one. I don't know much. But this is what I really need andI can't find it. I bet it is some $1000 piece of equipment.

Not any pres that you would actually want to use.

It's really pretty simple. You need a mic, a preamp, and a soundcard.

That's it!

The all-in-one boxes don't do ANYTHING WELL.

They just do whatever they do in a passable manner. They're marketed to folks that are looking for a one-size-fits-all BANDAID.

Face the facts: recording is an expensive hobby. The better the quality of recordings you want to make, the more $$$ it costs.

Yeah yeah yeah, I know John Glyns could make a decent recording on a 1984 Portastudio. And Harvey could too I would bet. But those of us that don't have 40-50 years of recording behind them aren't gonna get the same result.

What really makes a recording good is the artist... everything else is second to the talent. ;)

I am getting a good mic why not combine the Pre and soundcard? If you get a ghood pre with usb output you can go with out a real expensive soundcard. The reason is you will be able to use the USB to interface saving tons of money as well as making your setup mobile. Isn't that right? Cause that's the impression I got.

I don't believe the Tascam has phantom power. A friend just bought an EZBus on Ebay for three hundred, and it's a real step up. I'm using a Tascam US428, but only as a controller. The audio goes via ADAT soundcard.

I used to have the Tascam 224, but upgraded to the EZ Bus. It's worth the extra money for all that it does. The Tascam 122 has phantom, but the 224 and 428 do not.

I saw an edirol UA-5 and the M-Audio Dou which seem to have all these things in oe. I am not too concerned with phantom for now as the mic I plan on gettin comes with power supply so I could wait till I see these at a great price
thx

I got sick of the 2 track limitation imposed by USB, so I added an ADAT card to my PC so I can do 8 channels. The newer USB2 stuff can do up to 10 tracks simultaneously. If I was going to buy again, I'd go that route.

M-audio makes the Mobile Pre.

2 tracks - 1/4", XLR w/ phantom power
stereo input
stereo output
16/48 max recording
usb 1.1
