Im looking into getting a PCI interface for multitracking, any suggestions. Im not looking to spend a fortune, keep it under 800 if at all possible.

Echo Layla 3G

I don't use one, but I do have the Echo Audiofire 8 which is essentially the same device with a firewire PC connection.

$411 here: Echo Layla3G System LAYLA3G B&H Photo Video

Paul

Edit: should add it has 8 analog in/out (including 2 mic preamps), s/pdif in/out, and adat.

I have an old PCI Layla (original 20bit one) on my old studio (back up) computer and if was a great unit in its day, it still works fine but I don't use it anymore as it does not work with my new computer. Echo gear is very good gear.

Alan.

I highly recommend the RME HDSP9652 PCI card. 52 pristine channels (24 in and 24 out via ADAT plus S/Pdif ins and outs.) A very clean and stable card.

You must connect preamps via ADAT or add RME's optional analog expansion card.

Here are a few 8 channel pres to consider...
Focusrite OctoPre MkII
Presonus Digimax D8
Art TubeOpto 8
M-Audio Octane 8
Behringer ADA8000

Hey Nathan

I have used the Delta 1010 PCI unit for my older Mac and am currently using MOTU PCI-e 424 card with 24 i/o and 2408 Mk3 interfaces hooked to it.
No problems. No noise in the channels, bugger-all latency (not noticeable, anyway) and still have room for 2 more MOTU interfaces! :)

Pity you're not in Aus - my Delta 1010 is for sale.

The Echo stuff is good indeed. I had a Gina that was 20 bit and is the first stable system I had. Now I'm running a MOTU 2408 mkII and love it. Mine's the 324 card which in the PC world has some issues with mother boards with 3.5 volt PCI spec as the 324 cards want 5 volts. That's not an issue with 424 series cards.

If you are up for a challenge ( it's good after you learn it) pick up an used Emu 1280m..Good luck

Thanks guys, you are always extremely helpful. I was originally thinking RME, but I have heard alot of good things about the echo, and i also was thinking about m-audio 1010 and E-mu 1616m. I am thinking that the Echo may be the way to go, considering it has a decent breakout box with it.
