Anyone got any recordings from a Yamaha 2816?

We've just paid for ours second hand, and expecting it to be delivered this week.. pretty excited as a few years ago it'd be well out of our financial limits. We're mainly using it for live recording from venue soundboards (see my other posts) but i'm curious as to how good a sound quality this device would give me for recording bands for demos, possible 7" releases etc.

So if you've got one, and you're just a "normal" user (ie you don't have $10,000 of rack equipment hooked up to it!) I'd be intrigued to know what kinda stuff you've done and how it sounds. Alas my only real experience with a multitrack is a 4 track tape based machine, so i'm sure (well i hope anyway!) its in a different league to that!

I have been using the 2816 for a couple of years now. Very good quality.

I'm still learning the ins/out of the box.

CD burning is pretty easy and the manual does have some good clear spots. But, like many manuals today, it lacks organization.

There is a Yamaha AG16 forum out there that can help since the two boxes work in similar fashion.

Suggest you do get a mic pre for vocals and it can be used for up front solos.

The Yamaha effects on board are very good.

Editing isn't as good as the PC based programs; however, you can always redo a track. [Don't forget to push the "undo/redo" button.

You'll enjoy the box and should get decent recordings.

When in the CD mode, and mixing, use the Dynamics boost to get the "bigger" CD sound.

I use an AW16g and love it. Sound quality, FX, user interface, everything except the on-board mic preamps are just what I need.

Green Hornet doesn't really explain why you need at least one outboard mic preamp, but it's because the onboard ones lack the clarity and punch you get out of this or this.

Add one or both of those - every mic preamp has a different sound - and you'll be all set for years of great music making.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback.. considering doing "normal" recordings is going to be a bonus as its mainly for live recording, but its nice to use it for all its intended purposes. I'll be using it to do our podcast radio show too, should work really nice for that I imagine.. two mics, stereo CD decks in etc.

One more question.. on the 4416 there's that lovely VU Meter screen, and it hurts me to know that its not on the 2816, but is there some way of clear way of monitoring the 8 incoming signals to make sure they're not clipping?
