Seriously,... I think you'd be much happier right out of the box with a 246, as someone (I'd assume) who may expect or need higher capabilities in 4-track cassette recorders.
I've never had a 244. I have a 414 now, and I like the size of it. (Real estate is kind of limited in my studio.)
I had an old Porta One one time, and I remember that being kinda big and bulky. The 246 seems a bit bigger than that, huh?
Obviously, it's not that big if it's the only unit you're dealing with, especially considering the fact that it's a mixer/recorder in one. It's just that, well ... for a while now, cassette 4-tracks have kind of been like "studio B's" to me, and they usually end up living on the corner of a desk somewhere, so their physical size matters a little to me.
