Anyone else use Alesis M1 Active MK2 monitors?

I have a pair of these and love them....was wondering what others thought.......

I have some really old M1's that aren't powered. I like them alright. But, I'll tell ya, I've heard my speakers in an A/B comparison with some mackie powered monitors and the difference was night and day. I liked the mackies better but alas, I can't afford them. Alesis makes good stuff though. I'm a devoted Alesis customer. As for the powered version, I wouldn't mind having a couple.

...Alesis makes some great products -- and it fails miserably with others... On the failed side are their monitors and compressors.......

Well I went out to get monitors for $300, I actually went to listen to the m-audios, and they were some of the worst speakers i've ever heard....these blew anything in the price range away

Here's the trick... IMHO... Once you have monitors such as M1's, learn their sound and test mixes in other systems like your car or home theater or walkman. Once you've defined where your speakers lack you can make up for it in mix and eq. That's the less fortunate way for me. Anybody'll tell ya to just get good speakers and stop tricking your ears on what sounds good and what sounds like garbage. One day maybe...

I have a very clean used set I got for $230.

The original M1 Actives apparently had something that was failure prone. I've read some gripes on r.a.p and I know that about a year and a half ago eBay was flooded with M1 Active factory refurbs that were apparently sets that had gone back on warranty for this problem, whatever it was.

The M1 MK II Actives seem to enjoy a better reputation and are considered to be good bargains, among the best per buck.

I'm not sure if they are still in production, as Alesis has gone to a new line that's somewhat more expensive and has modeling.

That's kind of funny cause now that I have gotten rid of my Alesis monitors, I can finally hear compression.

Wow that's deep cuz I can't hear the shyt either. I'm going to treat the room before I trash my M1's though. I actually plan on keeping them and just adding a bigger set down the line.

I guess what I should say is I hear it diffrently now. I can pick out more subtle compression with my Event PS8's than I could with the Alesis monitors.

Agreed - I have a set of the Event ASP8 and the depth & detail is much better. I'm gonna blame part of the Alesis M1 problem on my room - I had too much mid and high acoustic treatments up which screwed up my RT60 - which screws up lots of stuff like depth and affected my sense of compression for sure. For now I'm keeping the RT60 around 400ms for my garage mixing and mastering. Garage is cool
