I was wondering how many people on this forum are using specifically the MSR24S....buit even the MSR24 DBX version??:)

I am using the DBX version.

Well glad to know that someone else knows a good machine when they hear one out here in "digital land" !! Mines only been in storage because of a divorce I went thru 4 yrs. ago. I am finally fixing to set it back up!! Im so exited Ive been organizing my extra bedroom finally,so now my livin room and extra bedroom will be all studio!!! Cant wait to see the reels rolling again!!!:D

Back when I bought my MSR16S new, I actually wanted a MSR24S, I could not loan the extra money from the bank so I got the MSR16S. I always wanted the 24 but I was never disappointed with the 16, recorded some great albums with it. I still have the MSR16S (in perfect working order) but don't get to use it much nowadays. The MSR24S was probably the best 24 track 1" ever made.

Wow ,beleive it or not after having the MSR24S I always thought about getting the MSR16S as like a baby brother and also liked the idea of the smaller format because of tape cost's at $65 a roll for 1" at the time was very expensive to me and my clients !!! And yes I do agree that the MSR24S is at least the best and cleanest sounding smaller format 24 TK. tape deck out there!!! In fact when i bought it brand new (hit me up for around $9000.00) I thought it sounded to clean kinda like digital LoL !!!The transports on these machines are so dam smoothe it amazing....and the LEDs man I love watching em LoL :laughings: But seriously I'll never part from my analog machines even though I like the little tascam DP-02 and the 2488 NEO a whole lot....but still it has always been one of my things to bounce from one machine to another and/are use this machine for this and that machine for something other, know what I mean !!!:guitar:

Was there another 24 track in 1" ?

I have 2 TSR8s which is from the same generation and they are great. The only thing is that they only have one head, so biasing and rec level, eq adjustments is a pain. Other than that i think the transport although simple and cheap, it is very reliable and soft with the tape. (when compared to higher end machines and older tascams).

You mean 2 heads right? one erase and one record/playback just like my MSR24S. Ive had no problems with that at all but im sure its probably a little harder to calibrate/align em when its only 2 heads??

2 heads, Erase and Record/playback, I too never had any problems with biasing and rec level, eq adjustments. I used to get my tech to check it every so often when I got the machine serviced but it was always minor adjustments. I think some people just like messing with this stuff, the single record/play head machines were in fact easier to setup and stay in spec according to my tech. When my machine was in full flight, I was recording at least 5 days a week 8 to 12 hours a day and the machine was rock solid.

The transport is not simple and cheap, it is very well made, which is why it is reliable and smooth. By the way, these machines worked best with Emtec (BASF) 911, which had very low head wear, long life and great sound. Plus if you were biased to 911, if a reel of 456 turned up the biasing was almost identical.

Thats great information Alan and I totally agree !!:thumbs up:

I think the MSR24 is a great machine. My point is that some decisions were made on its design to make it more affordable. The same applied to the MSR16 and TSR8s. I love my TSR8s and they work great. My points above, were around those design decisions vs. other machines, even older Tascams that were more expensive or with more pro features. The intent is not to compare those to higher end machines, like Otaris or Studers but to mention that those were Tascam standards for their machines on their immediate predecessors. Some of the design decisions were they cut corners were:

-2 Heads instead of 3 (you can't monitor real time on tape, nor BIAS/adjust quickly and easily for a specific type of tape) - sometimes you want some EQ applied on tracking.

-No bearings on the tape tension rollers
-Metal shaft capstan vs glass

-Belt drive motor and small capstan motor on the TSR8

-No low frequency EQ adjustment

-Track width (on the MSR16/24 especially) - lower cost on tape is a good thing for sure.

-No spool mode on the TSR8

-No easy adjustment on zenith for the heads (use shims, instead of adjustment screws)

-Ease of access to calibration pots (sure, depending on use this may not be a factor)

Even with those, that family of machines i think is the best bang for the buck that ever existed on semi-pro multitracks. A proff of that is that they do very well on the used market. But to give you an example the 48, 58 or MS-16 are superior machines, coming from Tascam as well, they were much more expensive at the time and targeted for a higher end market. I think the TSR8 kicks the ass of the Tascam38, no question about that. The microprocessor control of the MSRs works great.

Dam,I wonder how good the TSR8 would playback all of the tapes I have from my old 38 ?!?!?

But yeah yes I do know how smoothe the transport is on my MSR24S even after all these yrs.(around 1995?) Ive had it,its still as smoothe as it was when I bought it new !! I will be using the MSR24S along with the DP-02 and the 2488 NEO :eatpopcorn:

Yes,...

they are compatible. Dbx on the TSR8 can be switched on/off in banks of 4 (IIRC).
:spank::eek:;)

they have the same exact heads.

Good to know cause now I just might have to get me a TSR8 to listen to some of the wonderful stuff Ive recorded on my old 38(gone now) and have fun remixing some songs if i dont have trouble with sticky shed

My 24 and I have spent 4 wonderful years together, never had a single problem with it except for one time the power cable was loose and it would fast forward and rewind at a really awkward speed but it wouldn't play! Replugged the cable and it was smooth sailin.

Dunno if you have this bookmarked or not, but this guy makes good pinch rollers for the msr24
