They apparently replaced the 603s. I think only MF is selling them, atleast right now. From what I have heard (which is extremely little, as MXL doesn't even have info on the mic on their site), they are different mics, as in the 993 sounds different, and it has a low roll off and pad switch.

I am looking for mics for drum overheads that won't cost an arm and a leg. I'm pretty much set on Studio Projects C4s, but these, being only $170 for a pair, caught my eye. They don't have interchangable capsules, and they probably aren't as good, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask.

The 603s weren't supposed to have been the best overhead mics, but are apparently good for acoustic guitar. I was thinking they might have made these to try to improve the sound for overheads.

Yeah, I believe they are an MF exclusive. They still make and sell the 603s through other outlets if you don't need the switches.

MF still sells some packages with 603s, though, and I heard some stores ran out of them and couldn't order more.

So are they actually the same thing?

i just noticed the 993s...i dont think they're going to be the same....i think the 993s will have more presence

I remember a thread on here where someone called MXL and asked, and they said that the 993s were different mics, and had more "sizzle" than the 603s, whatever that means hehe.

Well, if anybody picks them up, do us a favor and say something. :)

Thoughts on XML990 vs. 603?

I just picked up an XML990 because that is all I could afford right now. But after hearing all the rave reviews for the 603 I am wondering If I should have bought one of those instead.

Which is the better "all purpose" mic? I'll be using it for Vocals, Acoustic, and drum overhead, maybe Guitar cab mic depending on if it sounds better than my sm57.

How do the 990 and 603 compare soundwise?

Thanks for any info you can provide.
