Well, I am totally new in here, I just got my new computer built few days ago, and all I want now is to record some mp3 songs into minidiscs. After trying out few times, it totally disappointed me, it's never like the quality of CD-->MD. I have a P-III 700, 128MB ram, SB Live MP3 and Hoontech DB 3. Is there anything I can do to improve the quality of my recording, or that's the best I can get from my p-III?? Any advise will be appeciated, thanks~~

Hi,

I suppose you've taking the analog out of the Live and connected it to the line in of the MiniDisc. Does your card have any digital out (if it doesn't, you should get the expansion board, or whatever they call it...)? You'd get a much better sound by connecting the digital out to the digital in on the MD. That is of course if they are of the same format (coax or optical), if they aren't you'll also need a coax-optical convertor which you can buy or make yourself if you like electronics...

Hope this helps

Of course you realize that you're recording something (an mp3) that's already been compressed once, and compressing it again with the MiniDisc's compression algorithm... this might have something to do with your poor results.

I have a Hoontech daughter borard which gives me an optical output. I tried both analog recording and digital recording, but it seems like they don't have much difference in quality, I am serious.

AlChuck, so......what you are saying is recording a MP3 into MD will never be perfect?

Well, yeah. Lose some quality... then lose some more... of course it can't be perfect. It might be decent, acceptable... but hey, no recording is ever perfect.

Yeah, you gotta remember that anytime you turn something into an mp3, you're going to lose some quality.

Fresh, a 120kbps mp3 is about the same quality as FM radio, while 160 gets you closer to CD quality. 96 kbps is unacceptable.

When they tell you that 128kbps is "CD quality" don't believe the hype.

Also, if you grab mp3's off something like napster, you never know what encoding algorhythm was used.

Think of mp3 sound quality as being like the digital version of analog cassette tape.

wow.....so everytime when i hear mp3 is very "close" to CD quality, it's a lie??
Well, I guess I can only blame myself for spending so much money on the sound card and not getting the result that I expected. Anyways, thanks everyone who posted a reply message~~

Just one more question from a newbie. If the mp3 is 128kbps, will it drop below 100 after recording to a MD, which is UNACCEPTABLE??
