Anybody have Akai DPS24?

Seems like as the money comes together I start considering different options. I love and prefer art and not necessarily tons wires, connections, and external stuff.
It seems its been underrated but the specs are amazing. Its been said to have amazing preamps, 24 bit 96 khz, great a/d converters, creates red book CD's, has a dithering function rather than trucation that some recorders my have(could be wrong), great effects and effects upgrades, and really good mastering tool kit.
My only question is can you put an overall reverb on the whole mix with it? That would eliminate me from getting a Rumor.
And individual compression on each channel is a must.
Also this machine would elimate an external mixer, lots of external pres, racks, and give individual mixing control on my drumset. Easily expandable as well.
 
I have had mine for over a year. I love it. For me, this was an upgrade from an old Yamaha 4-track (obviously no comparison).

You have access to 4 effects banks - easily thrown onto whichever tracks you like. Otherwise, you can always mix-down to 2 track stereo and add effects to the entire thing that way. You can have the MBCX or the FXs on, but not both at once - Mix down to 2 track, add overall effects, mix-down again, do your mastering. Not a huge deal really.

Every input and track has independent compression. Stereo L & R does as well when you mix-down, but the MBCX (multi-band compressor expander) would probably be a better choice at this time.

Some expansions available. 24 track ADAT out / in. SMPTE reader and generator. Also some kind of high-speed port expansion to add an external hard drive. Some of the guys are taking out the CD burner and adding a HD caddy and using swappable hard drives as well.

As a matter of fact I was wondering about the new v2.0 software is going to have 5.1 surround, it'll be awesome to have this feature.
SMPTE reader and generator? Whats that?
I'm pondering getting one on ebay for about 1700, know of any sources to get a different price? Its a great price too I know.
 
Oh ok well my other quest. has to do with the mastering. I prefer to run reverb after compression and limiting. This is possible as well right? I don't see why it wouldn't be but just wanted to know since you have it and I DON'T. :o (this is more like a sarcastic smirk if you look at it a certain way, like one of those goofy smiles that say "sure guy, yessirress Babb!" in a North Dakota accent, lol) Peace and Thanksgiving.
 
I know I have heard something mentioned about 5.1 surround in 2.0, but I can't recall when it was supposed to be released. Yes the reverb can be added after compression, both on individual tracks and on the final 2-track.

SMPTE reader is some kind of timecode, supposed to be better at keeping your gear in time with each other than midi. I don't use it, so I don't know all the details..

I've had my DPS 24 for about 2 1/2 yrs. Never a hiccup. A pretty solid machine.

Like Byron said, adding reverb (or any other fx) is pretty easily done at any time.....except when you're using the MBCX. The mbcx takes alot of oomph to run it so the other fx are not operable at that time.

In my opinion, the reverbs are ok as is.....but with a little tweaking they are actually pretty good. And the onbaord pre's are very clean and very useable.

And a side note...if you get one...a Maxtor Diamond plus 9 series harddrive is 1 of the most compatible drives out there.
