So I am completely new to recording. I have written about 10 songs, and I'd like to record a demo. Lots of vocal harmonies and all that kind of fun stuff.

So what gear do I need?
I already have a line 6 pod, headphones, audacity and speakers.

Obviously I need a mic and an interface.

I'd like to spend $60-80 on a condenser mic and about the same on an interface.

Would you recommend firewire or USB? Also would love to hear specific suggestions for a mic and interface combo. I'd like an emphasis on guitar and vocal recording.

Thanks so much for the help, and I'd love to contribute to the forum after I get my feet wet.

Howdy Ryan

You'll need to spend about twice as much as you have posted --at least.

Take a look in the free want ads HERE and you will see some deals if you have any questions most anyone here can help you choose what might be good for you out of that lot.

Welcome!

At the budget you listed, I wouldn't worry too much on finding a specific interface and mic. It's when you raise the budget that each mic starts to have it's own character.

Don't forget you budget has to include a mic stand and some cables as well. Frankly, you should also have some monitors for mixing in--but just to get you started and let you see why you need the monitors, I'll assume you have some closed cup headphones to get you started.

Frankly, your budget won't really stretch to anything much...probably something like a Shure PG48 mic and the best second hand interface you can find on eBay. If you can stretch a bit, you could upgrade to an SM57 which will serve you for years even after you start buying other mics--you can usually find package deals with a 57, a stand and a cable for around the $100 mark. I wouldn't want to recommend any condenser mics in your budget range.

Unless you need firewire or get an amazing deal, stick with USB2. Firewire is being phased out by computer manufacturers.

Do you have software? Reaper is darn good value but, after your initial 28 day trial, it'll cost you $60. Audacity is free but you'll soon find it limiting.

Check out the GLS ES-57. Its a really good SM57 knock off for $30

If that Tascam 800 is still $99 that would be a good starting point.
