Any particular order for equipment in rack?

Any preferred order for stacking studio equipment in a rack?

I'm starting off with a 12 space beneath my desk, but already seriously considering adding another 12 space next to it.
 
I prefer to keep my most frequently used gear that needs to be adjusted in real-time within easy reach and at ear level so I don't have to move out too far out of the monitors to make adjustments. I.e. my favorite eq and compressors. This is where really good on board eq and dynamics processing can come in handy. It sucks to have to turn around, bend over, or roll down to make an eq adjustment. Turn back around, etc. to make sure it sounds all right, turn back again to adjust, etc. etc. etc. It's good to keep space between units so air can circulate. Better yet, install rack fans. Never block any vents you may see on your rack gear. Many people don't realize how much faster gear detoriates when it gets too hot.
 
I have the pres on the bottom to keep the cables on the floor. I don't use a patchbay, but that's a good way to keep the cables low if you want the pres up higher. I like a very tidy back-of-the-rack, so that's my priority.
 
I always stack the coolest, and most sophistocated-looking stuff so it can most easily be seen.

That way I can impress the chicks.

Alas if only it worked that way. Chicks will dig whatever has the prettiest color so like a Electrix MoFx will get more attention than a LA-2a. GUYS on the other hand...

kiira, if I can ask a favor, please change your biography to something less appealing. Most of us guys here have never kissed a girl, and it's best not to get anyone's hopes up. :rolleyes:
 
kiira's occupation needs to be changed from "snotty girl" to "clever girl"

now now... you just have to go out and do some girl kissing. As everyone knows recording and musician skills are directly proportional to girl kissing skills - this is what guys tell me anyway - and I see some very competant names on the board here who I'm sure will be happy to provide some advice.

My rule of thumb has always been to keep the equalizers closest to the monitor field, then compressors/limiters... , etc. reverbs and delays the farthest away from the monitor position... gates, mic-pre's usually go more toward the bottom of the racks that way I can set them and forget them...
 
Alphabetical, being sure to keep adequate cooling space between any that start with "X" 'cause everyone knows gear with an "X" in the name is hot!
