Lots of ECM8000 users around here.... so I was wondering.

Has anyone modified one of these beasts? In particular, I'm wondering about replacing the capsule that is very similar to the Panasonic capsule with a Panasonic capsule from Digikey. -or- How about changing out the omni capsule for a more directional one? Would that have any hope of working, or would it need vent holes or some such in the body of the mic?

Curious minds want to know... :>)

You should make the modification and let us know how it turns out. Might as well lead the pack...

I can't see any reason to mod the ECM8000. It's not a 'character' mic, and works very well for the applications it's good at...measuring frequency response of rooms/speaker systems, drum overheads, acoutic guitars, and anything else that you want flat response from. It wouldn't be possible, to my knowledge, to change the polar pattern of the mic either...you'd have to change it's fundsmental design completely.

I like it, and wouldn't change a thing. :)

I remember reading that Harvey Gerst mentioned something about the ECM8000 possibly employing the Panasonic capsule or sounding like it.... something to that effect.

I wonder if that was ever confirmed.
Haryey? Anyone?

It's a copy of the Panasonic capsule made in the Phillipines, but it's a very good copy.

Well, it is marketed as a "reference mic". I don't know that you'd want to modify a reference mic. Secondly, it cost every bit of 35 dollars - so, who's gonna modify a 35 dollar mic?

But, hey, if you wanna try it, let us know how it goes.;)
