Thinking about picking one of these up and wondering if any of you have any feedback on these.

I have one and like it. I have no real amp to speak of, so I needed something I could use that has different sounds. It has lots of flexiblility, but seems to require some work with the eq when I record it, and then try and mix it. Very harsh distortion when recorded. I need to take the Highs down quite a bit to make it sound better. But, with only a small practice amp, and small children sleeping, I don't have much of an option myself. Don't expect it to automaticly sound like a great amp that has been miked, but you can get good sounds if you don't have the mic/amp option.bardo said:

Difficult to use at first(all these sub menus)was not happy with all the "tube"sounds,but after tweeking with it about a day or two found some great sounds and effects.
Real happy with the balls to the walls lead sound and when you stop playing very minimal hum.
To get these sounds with my Pevey I have to really crank it up and it creates alot of hum in the mix.
So far I love this thing for recording.

For recording, this thing is great. It allows you to go SPidf so that you get a flawless representation of the sound you hear and then allows you to go analog out so you can also record a clean sound and then 'reamp' later using the podxtpro or any type of software (amplitube, ampfarm etc)

I'm in the dark side of the pool and the water is pretty deep.
Thrid day with it and there is sooo much to learn.
Have not downloaded all the special software yet but will tonite.
It's funny,I bought this on Saturday when my drummer was picking up his new drum set(TD-20 e-kit)The set sounds AWSOME!No more miking and mixing all those drums.
Anyway,we jammed last night but spent most of the time pushing buttons and saying"wow"

I use an older Pod Pro 2.0. Sorry, can't afford a new XT. But I have learned that it sounds a hell of a lot less sterile if you send the line out to a bridged power amp, then to a cab, and mic up the cab. Sometimes, I send the line out to an active studio monitor and mic the monitor. Just because it can go direct doesn't mean that it should.-Richie

For best results, try using it in conjunction with a tube amp. It's a very handy item.

POD's and e-drums, oh my!
I've tried all kinds of POD's (2.0, xt, pro, etc.) in all kinds of configurations (S/PIDIF direct, analog direct, miked through a power amp and cabinet), and the thing just really doesn't turn my crank. It seems to genericise (is that a word?) all of my guitars. Whereas a 'Tele, a Les Paul and a '335 will sound and feel TOTALLY different through an AC-15 or even a Fender Blues Deluxe, when they are plugged into the POD, there ain't nearly as much difference. I've never been happy with the sounds I've gotten out of POD's either. People will say that you can get a good sound if you spend a ton of time in the software, really tweaking all the deep features. I've never had the patience for that, though. With a good amp, it typically only takes me a few seconds to get great tone. With the POD, I havn't been able to figure it out yet. Combine all of that with the fact that it just doesn't feel right. I don't know if it's a latency thing or something else, but I find I lose "immediacy" with the POD. There just isn't the same connection between myself and the music when playing with a POD. It feels dead to me.
At the same time, something like the POD is great for just doing rough ideas at night in a house full of people or an apartment. Something like the xt Pro is *way* overkill for that though. A used J-Station or a V-Amp would be just as good for a ton less cash.

some great tips to use with the POD XT Pro:
1. right now im using it as a Speaker Sim only. i take my 100w head into a THD Hot Plate, theres a Line Out on that, i take that into my PODs Line In, then i bypass the Amp Models, and use only the cab sim and mic sim. great way to use your loud amps at home, and its like having an amp model of YOUR amp!
2. also, i recenetly got an Apogee Rosetta 200 AD/DA Converter.. i am clocking the POD to the Rosetta now via S/PDIF and it sounds AND tracks better! the latency drastically improved when i did that... so if you guys have a nice piece of gear with a solid word clock, you should definately try clocking the POD to it...

the bottom line with modeling guitars and electronic drums is that it allows a person who is just getting starting in the art of recording to get decent sounds right off the bat. take any 2 newbies to recording and give one of them a pod and a roland v drum kit and put them against a newbie that mics a drum kit and guitar amp and it wont be hard to pick the winner. eventually the guy who uses modeling and e-drums will get bored and start experimenting with real cymbals and throwing a 57 on an amp .the newbie using the mics will probably get all fustrated and get quality no less than if they put a cheapo boom box in the room and hit record. i know thers alot of recording old fart dinosaurs (me included) that like to see dues paid but in the same instance i see too many get fustratred and give up. im sick of hearing totally crappy demos. i say model away and pump up the jams with those electronic kits!

ive got a pod xt (not pro) and i love it more for playing with than recording. when i record with it i get really frustrated cuz i cant get the sound that i want. but then again ive heard AMAZING tracks using the same device i have, so its more than possible to make a good track from a jazzy blues tune to an in your face metalcore epic. ive had better experiences with rock and jazz songs than ive had with punk/hardcore songs, but i think its because punk and hardcore have an extremely raw sound to them, which is why going digital just wont get that same feel. but u can sure as hell get close. and dont listen to those elitests that say "mic'd tube amps are the only way to go". i know what level your on when u cant mic an amp at 2:00am in an apartment complex. i love the pod xt and its versatility, but i would recommend going to ur closest music store (ie: guitar center or sam ash) and trying it out for urself. personally, i recommend it, then if u get bored of it, u can always get a 57 and mic a roland tube amp or something. or maybe mix them like others have said.

As for POD's.....as with anything else it all in what you like to hear. It's OPINION. I lOVE what PODs can do. I lOVE the sounds you can get when recording direct. I am of the opinion that micing a cab is no better and no worse that going direct. It all just depends on how you use it. It is generally irritating to me to hear people say that recording direct is "a way for nubies who are just learing the art of recording to get a decent sound right off the bat".
Whatver. I've recorded guitar both ways MANY times over the years and you really need to use whatever tool sounds best for the job and forget the generalized notion that direct is for nubies.
Have an open mind fer chrissakes. If you take the time I promise you will find sounds you REALLY like from A POD.

I second Zed's opinion on recording direct. It can sound very good and no one would be the wiser. As home recordist, setting up and working with a mic is not always easy. Direct is so much easier and faster. I've never used the POD but don't get caught up in the posts that state micing is the best way to go. Direct can work just as nicely once you get your configuration worked out.
