Hey, im new to the forum, im happy i found it tho. I use a fostex vm88 mixer with a digital-in to the fortissimo II sound card by hercules. I use audition (or cool edit) same thing... and sm57s all around and the beta52 for the kick. I have a saturn pro set (mapex) with double pinstripes on the toms and a evans g(1 or 2 i forget on the snare) cymbals are a mix of sabian, zildjian, and paiste.

if you have any suggestions, let me know. I think on this recording i only used 2 overheads and the kick mic, cus the whole band recorded at the same time (its a jam) later. :D

Xeon - Coffee House Jazz

I should mention, the track doesnt start til 22 seconds into it. so be patient please.... id really appreciate some feedback on the drums

Drums sound pretty good from here.

Everything can be heard clearly. The rid is a little quiet (could be my PC speakers) but it does have a nice airy quality to it

hey

yo i agree with bulls hit the ride is quiet but idk sounds good i wish i had that sound on my drums

Thats cool :) , i just bought the 6 mic boom stand deal from musicians friend. 99$ for 6 stands and a bag. so, ill be able to get better sound. Im also getting 1" rigid fiberglass from homedepot (11.50) a sheet (4'x8') . others tell me what ya think pleaes!

some more people comment on my recording please... 2 people isnt really enough to help me record better

The sound isn't bad. Timing is a little off and you may want to work on your dynamics a bit.
You may also want to look into some decent over-heads to capture the cymbals better.

It was my understanding that he wanted "any input" .....
Does that put me out of line?

very good acoustically... and very enjoyable...

appears the basic tracking was well done...

maybe a smidgeon to much Kick... maybe not though... yea maybe 1/2 smidgeon...

kit has nice open sound... maybe add a little more snare closeup if available...

bass is well rounded and full...

guitar sits well... (thought of jeff beck)

each instrument has space... and occupies it's own space very well...

overall acoustic balance was pleasant...

recording critique

The kick (well captured btw) is a tad loud - it pumps and distracts from the overall sound. I disagree with than earlier comment about the ride cymbal being too low in the mix - sounds fine to me, although the mics used don't appear to be very hi end (they lack sparkle).

I'm only listening on Sony CD250 headphones, but the guitar and bass could either be brought in slightly more central, OR add some more ambience on the guitar to pull it over into the middle of the picture. Giving instruments space is fine, but the elements are a bit too divorced from each other in this recording. Where the timing is a bit off, having things more central would make this feel less apparent. I'm not saying go mono, just pan bass and guitar in a bit closer.
