Man I tell you, their new album really moves me inside.

Warren Haynes just has a way with his lyrics and guitar tones and chords to really pull emotion out of a listener. He is completely on another level of human emotion than most artists out there. THe song "child of the Earth" is just amazing on their new album.

Maybe its the extreme cold weather making me feel meloncoly or something, but what a great album. I can just listen to this all day with the headphones on.

Ok, now the thread can start.

I know he uses cesar diaz and Soldonos amps live. Anyone else know if he just uses stock, or are they juiced up ?? He used so many different tones and distortion stages, just wondering if its all in the volume knob.

Same live as the studio ?

thanks.

I read on GuitarGeek that he uses a Metal Zone distortion pedal! I can't believe that anybody going for a classic, vintage tone could get it out of a metal zone...that blows me away.

I can't say that I've ever been much of a fan just because of the whole southern rock thing, but I totally respect his playing abilities. He's a great improv player with great phrasing.

met rocco once when he was in TOP... way cool bassist...

Metal Zone can be a GREAT all around distortion pedal at nearly any drive level but I think because the word "Metal" is in it, many non-metal players never give it a fair try. Its far from being just a one trick pony though.

I agree about the word METAL being misleading..... dont know much about the METAL zone, but one of my favorites is an old Ibanez METAL charger. It is identical to a tubescreamer, but has extra eq controls and 3 of the od chips. Cant believe im blowing this secret, as you can find these puppies for nothing and they absolutely kill if you keep the gain knob low. Anyone else have one of these?

He's still with Tower of Power. All he ever did with the Mule was record a song for the Deep End albums. Along with MANY other great bassists. The new bass player in the Mule is Andy Hess, who has played with Scofield and the Black Crowes, among others.

Steve Z.

Mule is the best live band out there today. But I would say that, wouldn't I?
Really- if you like 70's hard rock, check them out, especially their last two albums: Deja Voodoo and High and Mighty. Great songwriting, vocals, and of course incredible guitar tones. And their live shows do get better and better each time I go see them. (21 times so far). Even an average night with these guys leaves most people shaking their heads in disbelief.

New Mule? blah. Not so much.

Old Mule with Allen Woody on bass? Now we're talkin. they redefined the term "power trio". no one could rock like the abts/haynes/woody combination.

The new mule, with andy on bass, whatshisname on keys and far too much ron holloway on sax just doesn't do it for me. they're too political and pop song oriented, and having a weak bass player keeps them from being able to ROCK.

i saw a show here in cville a couple tours ago where andy couldn't hold the line in Thorazine (during the drum solo). even matt was glaring bullets at andy. i mean, cmon, it's not that difficult a part.

When they brought out Dave Schools on bass for the "new school" tour in 2001, that was some good stuff--chuck leavell was with em on that tour too. schools did an excellent job at filling that void. every other bassist they've had play (outside of a one-off guest spot) has just been weak. and that sax has JUST got to GO.

IMO, when woody OD'd, they shoulda done like LedZep and hung up the name Govt Mule......call it the Warren Haynes Band or something--b/c this ain't govt mule anymore--it's certainly not the band i fell in love with in 1994. :(

cheers,

Don't know if he still does

but Warren used to plug (and actually use) Epi's, but does anyone know his pickup choices?

I'm looking for really good 70's southern rock humbuckers.

There's always a few saying the new Mule sucks. But they are wrong.

Check out Warrens' take on Low Spark with Phil & Friends. SheSaid SheSaid and Passenger too ;) The Beacon shows on this tour were pretty far out too.

Warren on the right, Jimmy Herring on the left.

I was at this show. Phill was doing the bass line, and I asked the guy in front of me "What is that?" and he had to think about it, and then it hit us both like a flash. His tone with Phil was always spot-on. One thing I noticed is it seemed like his sound is a bit harsher in the first set than the second. I don't know if it's because everything is really warmed up and cooking or what, but I've noticed that at a few shows now. Maybe they have to dial a bit to compensate for voltage differences night after night at venues. Just seems like his guitars "sing" better as the night goes on.

Warren and Jimmy with Phil and Friends was probably about the ONLY time the Dead's music ever really reached me. largely b/c warren brought some ROCKANDROLL *ass* to the music that it had never had before. and then they went and did "the dead" which was just lameness warmed over, and then Phil pissed Jimmy off (and Warren too) in the midst of all that, that he had to settle for a really crappy band (can we say Joan Osbourne?) for this most recent incarnation of PNF.

.....and Jimmy is just phenomenal. ARU, Project Z, Frogwings, you name it, it's all great. have any of you heard some of the stuff he's been doing with Widespread Panic lately? OMG.

And to tie it all together, 10.3.93, Van Ripers Lake, Warren Haynes Band, Freddy Jones Band, Dave Matthews Band and Widespread Panic.....and Warren sits in with Panic for what HAS to be the BEST "Low Spark" i've EVER heard....and they follow it up with a massive Fishwater. I'll be glad to kick out copies.

I have never been disapointed in a Mule show. I think Dave Schools was on bass the first time I seen em. Never been disapointed, though I dont like th enew album so much as their others.
