Haven't tried, found or otherwise even heard of DVD's to help with mic placment. I'm old school...I just read everthing I get my hands on, watch/hang out in every studio I can get into and experiement with the stuff I have on hand.

yea i have read alot but im more of a hands on kinda guy... I plan on going to school next year for recording. I have called sevral studio's around me and asked if i could just watch and learn and maybe help with anything and every studio is like bring me a client and you can come in. Well everyone i know is poor so looks like im not geting into any studio's to learn anytime soon so im looking for a dvd.

I have found a couple dvd but not sure which are good so any recomendations would be great!!!!

Check out "Russ Long's Guide to Nashville Recording" DVD

Check out this DVD - I've got it, and it's definately the best, real world "how to record music" instructional DVD available :

http://www.audioinstruction.com/page/page/1486665.htm

It covers all aspects, including mic'ing, processing, mixing, and lots of other stuff.

The Basics of Modern Recording & Mixing - by Secrets of the Pros

Availability: SameDayMusic.com for $39 (includes shipping).
Customer Service: Ordered it on-line, received it the next evening!
Content: 2 DVDs (3 hrs) - Beginner to intermediate level instruction (Pro Tools oriented)

Note: I was disappointed that it wasn't more advanced, but it's great for giving you a better understanding of many basic recording concepts and room acoustics. Overall, I think you'll be happy with it.

Good luck!

That's news to me... I got my copy a couple months ago... maybe they sold out and had to get more made? I'd Email them if you're interested and ask them why it's not available til April. Either way, it's well worth the bucks.

The page is just a bit out of date. Available April 2005. Next April is 2006. You can buy it on Amazon.

There was a really good videotape series that my father used to show (parts of) back when he taught recording classes. Ii just looked it up in the college library online, and I think it was the "Shaping Your Sound" series by First Light Video Publishing. I can't think of anything on mics specifically, but I think there might have been some mic technique described in one of them---maybe the multitrack recording one.

Shaping Your Sound With Equalizers, Compressors, and Gates
Shaping Your Sound With Mixers & Mixing
Shaping Your Sound With Multitrack Recording
Shaping Your Sound With Reverb And Delay

Looks like Amazon lists the Reverb & Delay one and another one that the college library didn't list called SYS with Microphones. Should be pretty good, I'd think, if the rest of the series is any indication.

There is also a free on line course from The Recording Institute of Detroit.
It is a 30 lesson course with audio examples and nice graphics. You sign up, then start lesson #1 then take the test at the end of the lesson. You grade your self, but if you fail, you have to take the test again, and it's not the same test. You then E-mail the test results back to them, and they send you a code to start the next lesson. When you finish all 30 lessons you get a sheepskin as being certified. I will just take the tests every now and then just to keep on top of things
