any church players here??

Just chiming in.

I play bass on a rotation...current gig is an act of service more than rewarding musically.

Long story short had a great gig with very good players at a church I had been with for 18 years... for some reason we merged with another church and our Saturday night service got axed.

Did not play at all for two years and am now playing with the same worship leader at antoher church that was a very traditional Baptist (Hymnal and organs) but "wants to become more contemporary".

It is just not clicking right now as the keyboard player has not really played much of anything written before 1950's . The drummer wants to follow me for the tempo and I need to follow him. The lead guitar player (most Sundays) is just learning to play and does not really "step up" to take the lead but he will get there one day.

Musically it is painfull but I try to focus on worshiping and looking at it as a service.

The good gigs I have had have been awesome when everything is clicking and we were "improvising in the spirit" ... I desperately hope to get back to something like that someday.

Meanwhile I hope to find a writing partner (I cant' sing) and develop some homerecording , mixing and producing skills sandwiched between married life, kids, little league baseball, soccer.......it may not happen till the kids get into college.

 Cool Thread. I advise the sound dudes at our church. The pastor has asked me for a couple of years to take over the board but I have not been able to because of my job. (ON-call 24/7 most of the time) The church was using my monitor system until they were able to purchase their own three weeks ago and I set it up for them.

When the church does outreaches such as block parties, I supply them with my small sound system and run it unless our band is playing one of the sets.

Cross Omega broke up about a month ago and I (actually GOD did it) put a new band together using two of the former members and a new guitar sidekick. We are an evangelistic outreach band doing mostly original Christian High Energy Rock and Blues.

Mike, why don't ya ask the leaders if you can do a special sometime?

Blessings!!!

heh

this is a great thing to see...
fellow siblings talking about their faith and their devotions in their churches with no shame...
yea!! thats what i'm talkin about.. lol

well, i'm a worship leader for youth group in my church. I still have LONG way to learn to walk in His ways.. only 19.. hehe
I want to play electric so bad (linc. 'the brew' is mah fav. worship leader) but where the youth kids meet is so small if i even put a LITTLE distortion, it gets too loud... and the youth are expanding in our church thanks to the grace of god...
so we are all praying for a bigger place, but most of all... we are just praying that these kids may see that there is nothing better in this world than to serve the Lord our God...
ppl need to see and FEEL the grace and the love of God....

haha i'm getting carried away... well, thats my story in my church
god bless~! :D

Anyone else find it hard to adjust to contemporary worship when your own music is completely different? It's frustrating because, as much as I don't enjoy the musical style, I continue to play every week (no other guitarists to make a rotation, like we have for drums and bass), mainly because I don't want to sing this stuff and clap my hands to it. Don't misunderstand me, I respect the writers who put this music together (and their love of the Lord), and I love the message contained in these songs, but the music itself just leaves me feeling indifferent.

Yes totally, at the church that I've been playing at for a long time, the main service is mostly older folks and the music is more hymnal type stuff and I have to really hold back on what I can do on the drums and it's kinda frustrating because I like being able to just "rock out". :D It's definitely good for teaching "control" on the drums, but I can't really get into that style of music...

But at the new church I've been going to, their main service is way more rockish and they have a huge band: Two guitarists (one electric and one switches between electric and acoustic) , two keyboards (one of them is the lead singer and he's got an incredible voice), drums, bass, and about 5 or 6 backup singers. And they have a lot of rotating musicians, I still see new people up there that I've never seen up there before and they're all incredibly tallented. I'd really love to get in with that band!

Man I saw a great drummer last night! This dude had some chops! He was playing with Mark Schultz...used to play with Steven Curtis Chapman, didn't really catch his name but I think it was Neil Wilkinson.

DonF, I dunno..........I'm sure there are some great original tunes floatin around this thread....there's certainly no shortage of talent! We just need someone to put up a proposition.

I'll give you a proposition. You guys play and I'll sing. It doesn't matter what, as long as it has a good message.

This is the first time I've been on the guitar forum because I don't play anything. I just sing. I'll try to give my comments on some of the things you guys said.
Church sound systems- They either need to be updated or need someone to run them that knows how to run sound. I think lots of times the person running sound is the only one who volunteered. They're just trying to do what every Christian should be doing (be useful to God), but they don't know what all those knobs and buttons do.

What kind of music?- This subject has split many churchs up. Some people think if it has guitars or drums that it is of the world and has no place in church. I think some people are gonna be surprised when they get to heaven (if they make it) and people are dancing and singing and praising God with guitars and drums turned up loud. I am called to sing the message of Jesus Christ and often times feel restrained by the musical beliefs of the other group members. They don't want to do anything that may have a rock beat or maybe slightly contemporary. What kind of music? Any music that lifts up the name of Jesus Christ, any music that lets people know that they need Him in their lives, any music that tells people that He is the only thing they need. Here is a little example of only one of the kinds of Christian music I like. It is a soundtrack and I did the lead, baritone, and tenor. I also like the style and songs of Third Day. One of the most annointed groups out there right now.

Sorry for the book.

You guys should give a listen to a tune I wrote. I like the words but I have never really cared for the arrangement that I came up with for it. If anyone wants to do anything with it I would be greatfull.

the song is called "The One That Is"

I think it has some potential.

For some reason NWR is just not coming up......way slow. I'll try a little later.

We got into it pretty far, but it became too hairy to continue. I found myself putting way too much into a stylistic mismatch and ended up seething a lot. Of course, that ain't what it's about. So we gave it a rest, found another place, and we're getting our feet wet again. This time, I'm trying to keep it all at arm's length. It means too much to fight over.

Here's a new one from Good Friday.

I'm just a small time youth pastor newbie that's very encouraged to read this thread. Our praise team's a "work in progress" but very teachable. We sound a 100 times better than we did a month ago...we're getting there. Their all young, but moldable. I'd rather have a teachable person that's barely competent on his/her instrument than a cocky, young buck who plays extremely well and thinks he/she knows everything and has no room to grow. Just my thought.
Back in college, I used to lead a praise team of 9 (2 acoustics, 1 electric guitar, a drummer, keyboardist, 2 bassists who rotated every week, and 2 back-up vocals) and the bassist didn't know anything about that instrument....In fact she sounded so bad, that people started to approach me about it. Before I could have a chance to talk to the bassist about the situation, she practiced like crazy and started slappin' the next quarter. I was shocked and humbled! Anyhow, that's my story. God bless all y'all using this gift that He provided!

Good song Elvis. I'd say the key needs to come up some and maybe a little faster tempo might do the song some good. Just saying this since you said you don't like the arrangement.

This thread inspired me to post some picts...
