Hi,

I already have a pretty good listening studio, but now i want to record some songs. The plan is just me singing to a backround music either from karaoke machine or regular cd player for now. Ive been thnking to record to a vhs tape. I already went and bought a small digital setup for 1 grand, but it pretty much sucks. So im now going for all analog. I have the least knowledge on recording, so i dont know 100% exactly what stuff to get.

I have been looking at these:

Mixer: MACKIE 1642 VLZ3

Microphone: AUDIO TECHNICA AT4081

I havent decided on headphones or microphone stand yet

But anyway, do i need something more? Is this all i need? My budget is around 2-3 grand, thanks.

Onto VHS? What digital setup did you get for $1000 that you don't like, and why? There is an 'Analog' section of this forum where folks can help you with particular equipment.

This is like swearing off of beef because you don't know how to cook. What makes you think you'll have better luck cooking fish?

Sucks how? Dropouts? Bluescreens? Can't figure out the recording apps?

Tell us what digital setup you bought and how you are using it.

I really dig pork. There's just something about it makes you want to eat it raw.

Its just some pocket size boss mixer, nothing special, the buttons aren't even real buttons, some touch sensitive crap so i have to push 5 times for each button before it works, i got all the money back from them, so its no problem anymore.

I just want a real quality analog setup. Analog is the real deal. I don't want to edit my voice in any way, just record it, no editing no nothing, straight to tapes, that's it. Anyone i ask say that digital / computer setup is better, no one knows about analog recording now a days, that's why I'm asking here.

You might just get the same answer here and have to ask somewhere else :P

Analog certainly has it's followers, many of whom are around here, but they aren't followers because the buttons suck on digital gear.

Really, if ergonomics and ease of use are your priorities, I'd forget about tape etc.

Unless there are other reasons you wanna go analog, i'd recommend getting a good one or two channel interface (if you have a computer)

VHS isn't really recommended.
While it can be done, differences in tracking between machines (and even in the same machine over time) can make it more hassle than it's worth

If that's your main reason I would say stick with digital and get a better interface.

Tape is difficult to come by, the machines are old and many needs repairs like new capacitors/belts/heads/rollers/etc. Parts are available then you need to find somebody that can work on it or diy.

Then analog machines need calibration and demagnetization and maintainence.

So there's more to it than just pushing a button and making the reels spin.
