Hi everyone,

Please check out Antarctica's first song - "Finally". We're fairly new to mixing and mastering, so any feedback on the mix would be greatly appreciated. The following page has a link to the mp3, and the list of gear used.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Hey man,

Nice song, first of all, and your band sounds good, too. I think the mix is very cool and punchy with the exception of the lead vocal. To my ears the singer is way buried in the mix. For a lot of the song I can't make out the lyrics because the instrumentation (pretty as it is) just dominates the tune.

Nice song. I think the guitar is a bit loud, but other then that it sounds nice.

You know the old Disney cartoons where they had a front acetate, like with Bambi on it, and other acetates behind with the forest on them?

That's what I want to hear with the lead vox sorta "stuck" on the front of the track like a refrigerator magnet, but I'm not, the guitar has more treble presence than the lead vox so it keeps on interrupting the vox.

Yes, like others said, the guitar is too loud... well, it isn't, the problem is that the vox doesn't have enough shine on it - the guitars have more, which is backwards. The guitar could stay the same if you got more shine out of the vox. Usually the problem is that everybody's got great guitars like their heroes but not the mics and mic pres their heroes use.

BUT - overall it does sound very good - I like the song and the feel, and that's the main biscuit, all this other stuff is just the icing on the cake - and I like the cake!

Don't know why but the vox sounded like Supertramp to me.

Yeah, Dinty, the vox do need more presence and shine. The SP mic should provide the necessary "air" shouldn't it? Pretty good other than that Simon. The drums are nice IMO; I like hearing a bit of "room" in the drums. Guitars could be mixed down a tad.

I gotta say though...sites like SoundClick exist so people can link others to their material to be streamed instantly. I don't like downloading an MP3 just to hear it and I know I'm not alone...

First off, great songwriting, I detect a lot of class here.
Mix and performance sound pretty good too. The thing with the voice is a frequency issue I would say. Polish it a little bit and you've got a great tune here.

Started listening...

Great mix. Careful execution of parts. Works right.

Then the vocal came in. Yup...a little down or not bright enough. You can fix that. The voice is not super...but adequate.

But there's a bigger problem. The vocal melody is not strong. And some of the phrasing is awkward...and some of the word-choices: few will hear the song, and remember it...and sing it.

The band, I love [except where the bass player plays b7ths on non-dominant chords , like at 1:27...a lot of people don't notice that; but guys who work for people with money to invest in your band, do!] ; but the melody and words of the lead vox are nowhere near the high quality of the band's support. There are moments where the vox is great...but not enough.

If your gonna spend all this effort and time in putting together a real CD and put it out there....and you want to get signed, and/or sell it.... I'd suggest you spend a lot of time fixing the vocal...melody, phrasing and words. The music's real good. I enjoyed that......and enjoyed it for the full length of the song. I think the mix is great. I LOVE THE BAND! I LOVE THE MIX. I LOVE THE ARRANGEMENT. You're so close......

Where in Antarctica do you live? :^)

+1 for making the vocals shine more. I think the performance is just fine and suits the song, but the lead vocal needs to be front-and-center. Keep it up.
